The first people to live in what would become Arlington were Native Americans who hunted and gathered food near present-day Lake Tapps and Mount Elliott. In 1851, landowner James Cook purchased 36 acres (14 ha) of land from the nearby Chugach Tribe for $10 per acre ($/ha). He named his new property Arlington after George Washington's home state of Virginia. By 1860, over 100 homes had been built on Arlington Heights, making it one of the most rapidly growing towns in King County. In 1865, Arlington became county seat of King County and was renamed to honor President Andrew Johnson's wife Lady Bird Johnson because she had helped manage many aspects of county government during his term as president. On July 8, 1871, when Tacoma was incorporated as a city with its own government, Arlington became a separate municipality within that city limits and continued to be known as "Arlington". In 1916-1917, Arlington annexed parts of Bellevue so that their populations would be combined; this annexation created what is now Bellevue Park neighborhood on South Lake Union Boulevard between University Street and Totem Pole Drive in Bellevue
The first permanent white settlement in Arlington was made by Captain John Smith in 1692. The town was named for General George Washington, who had been the first President of the United States. The town grew rapidly and by 1795 it had a population of over 1,000 people. In 1814, Arlington became a state capital and was renamed Washington City.
