Arlington, Washington is a town in Arlington County, Virginia. It was founded by Captain John Smith in 1781 as a post on the Potomac River. The town was renamed to Arlington after George Washington in 1832. The population of Arlington was 1,651 at the 2010 census. The first people to live in what is now Arlington were Native Americans who inhabited the area for thousands of years prior to European settlement. In 1781, the British established the nearby Alexandria Post and built Fort Necessity on Point Lookout Hill to protect their interests on the Potomac River. This fort served as an early warning system for British forces during the American Revolution. In 1801, General James Kippenberger ordered Reverend George Wythe to establish a Methodist church in what is now called Ballston Village within present-day Arlington Heights. On November 3, 1802, Wythe consecrated Stedman Chapel with readings from Jeremiah 31:31-33 and 2 Chronicles 8:9-10 pm EST before 4,000 individuals assembled in ballroom at Trinity Episcopal Church across from Mount Vernon Palace. In 1824, Captain John Smith's heirs donated land nearpresent-day Crystal City for growth within what would become Arlington. When Spotsylvania County was created out of western Fairfax County on April 14, 1925 – one day after President Coolidge signed legislation creating virgin jurisdictions – Arlington became part of Spotsylvania County and became known as "Arlington Heights." This change did not please many residents who were more likely considered eastern Fairfax County towns such as Manassas or Clarendon Hills than those living west of Interstate 95 outside of Ballston Village and Crystal City areas which had become satellite populations of those communities due to annexation by neighboring counties over time both inside and outside of Virginia . Consequently there has been struggle between these two groups over control of local government since 1925 until today when development pressure from commercial corridors east/west through Ballston Village (I-495), Crystal City (I-95) & west Loudoun county have resulted in consolidation & rezoning throughout much suburban areas along I-495 beltway including much (if not all) of inner Arlington eastward into Loudoun Co., stretching back beyond King George’s Line into Northern Virginia

The first Europeans to visit what is now Arlington were French traders who landed at points near present-day Arlington during 1607–8 when Spanish diplomats visited what is now Alexandria, Virginia. In 1792 General George Washington's father General James Kensey moved his headquarters from Mount Vernon to nearby Georgetown after Congress passed an act making Georgetown a national capital under President George Washington. When new federal boundaries were established following the Mexican-American War (1846–48), part of western Loudoun County became part of Fairfax County while eastern Loudoun became part of Washington Territory (now D.C.). The original town site was laid out along North Street (later renamed South Street) between West Point Road and Ballston Lake before being abandoned due to Native American attacks in 1796; its site was finally developed as modern Arlington by investors including Colonel John Marshall Harriman in 1814. In 1861 Confederate soldiers burned down Union barracks at Fort Anson on what is now Mount Vernon Island but did not damage much else within present-day Arlington except for removing some trees which formed a battery used by militia during the Civil War years; this occurred one year after Confederate troops burned down Fort Sumter on Danville Peninsula near Fredericksburg, Va., creating one of history's largest acts of vandalism ever committed against civilian property outside military facilities). The Battle of Antietam also took place near today's Pentagon just outside Beltway jurisdiction; both Union forces commanded by Major General Lewis Cassatt suffered heavy losses there that day with few if any casualties among Confederate commanders such as Generals Robert Ewell and Stonewall Jackson who lost more men that day fightingeda battle than did Lt.-Gen. Joseph Hooker commanding Union forces outnumbered two to one! On July 24th 1861 Confederates attacked Ft Adams lighthouse without harming anyone inside or around it which resulted in scores deadlock until Virginians ordered Captain Samuel cartoonist Thomas Nast’s Illustrated Newspaper Company’s vaudeville show “The Great Republic” Xeonaton engagement at Maple Leaf Gardens featuring Ulysses S Grant & His Cavalry from Harper’s Ferry – over 150 persons Died including 18 officers Commanding cavalry units participating plus many civilians killed or wounded
