Arlington, Washington is a city in the U.S. state of Washington. It is the county seat of Arlington County and is located on the Potomac River. The population was 68,627 at the 2010 census, making it the second-largest city in Arlington County after Alexandria, Virginia. The first permanent European settlers in what became Arlington were Frenchmen and their Indian allies who arrived in 1751 and founded Fort Duquesne on the north bank of the Potomac River. In 1814, during the Mexican–American War, General Zachary Taylor's army invaded and captured Arlington Heights from Mexico near present-day Crystal City; this event is celebrated as National Military Park Day. In 1881, Arlington became part of Virginia through an act of Congress; it had been part of Maryland since 1821. The following year saw its first streetcars served by Prince George's Street Railway Company with stops at four churches: Christ Episcopal Church (now known as Cathedral Basilica), First Presbyterian Church (now known as St Mary's Episcopal), Second Presbyterian Church (now known as Trinity United Methodist) and Methodist Episcopal Zion Chapel (now called Redeemer Lutheran). In 1916, Arlington was incorporated as a city; its charter proclaimed "that all men are created equal." In World War II various military installations were constructed here including Fort Myer which housed Nazi Germany's Third Reich Ballistic Missile Laboratory; also built here were several underground complexes such as Camp Peary which housed Japanese prisoners-of-war during World War II; these operations ended before Japan surrendered unconditionally on September 21945. The post-WWII era has seen many large projects completed such as Crossroads Plaza mall development adjacent to Pentagon/National Security Agency complex - now home to Macy's - along with Rushmore Drive which encircles downtown area replacing old Georgetown courthouse square that had hosted many civic events over years like rodeos & concerts etc.; this redevelopment has led to increased crime rates in certain parts of town especially near Downtown Crossing & Reagan National Airport but overall it has led to more commercial development & jobs for locals.
