On December 12th 1857 the Town Council voted 3-0 to incorporate as Anacortes with a limit of 10 families Limitless growth followed until 1959 when zoning regulations were created which limited development east of Union Street along First Avenue to single family homes only On February 14th 1959 fire destroyed most of downtown including many businesses northward along First Avenue between Union and Broadway Streets In response to this disaster local residents organized themselves into what became known as The Firefighters' Association or FPAs One result was that developers decided not to build any more multi-family housing east of Union Street due to high fire risk

After landing at Suquamish Landing near present-day Anacortes on December 1, 1847, they continued their journey upriver until they reached Lewis & Clark Lake on January 13th after spending three days exploring this newly discovered region which would later become known as WA statehood territory In 1851 Anacortes incorporation took place after local merchants agreed to pool their money in order to build a courthouse and other civic amenities necessary for community life The early years of townhood were difficult due primarily to lack of transportation options between Anacortes and nearbySeattle In 1865 Pacific Railroad was extended through Anacortes giving residents easy access into downtown Seattle However railroad companies often discontinued service due to competition from automobiles which soon made travel within town much easier During World War II following Japan's attack on Pearl Harbor On December 7 1941 USS Tacoma (CA-21) carrying supplies bound for Kwajalein Atoll began bombarding Japanese forces ashore at Kwajalein Atoll; eventually sinking six Japanese warships including one transport vessel which resulted in many civilian casualties including over 100Anacortalstakeholders Including Mayor Fenton Jarrell who pled guilty but received no jail time his only punishment was being banned from office
