They named their new discovery "Nisqually Harbor" after one of their crewmen who had seen a groupof dolphins swimming near shore on Islay Island off southern Scotland early that morning llst August 1792 In 1814 Elijah White settled here with his family from Maryland as one of first permanent residents in Puget Sound region following Utopia Land grant program announced by President James K. Polk in April 1853 White was followed two years later by Matthias Deitsch who founded Tacoma Marine Insurance Company Ltd., America's first insurance company based out of Seattle In 1912 Anacorte became part of township created under state law following reorganization resulting from recent annexation (King County) into Washington State On October 1st 1916 USS Arizona sunk off site while undertaking exercises with local seaplanes at North Bend Harbor south eastof Anacortes just minutes after Task Force 28 planes dispatched from Naval Air Station Whidbey Island bombed targets ashore during WWI bombing campaign against German submarines

By 1824 there were also many buildings erected such as churches and schools which helped increase trade between Puget Sound region and Canada During World War II most residents left for Tacoma due to shortages brought about by Japan’s bombing raids on Seattle However some residents decided to stay behind including Mr & Mrs Kappeler who managed A&P grocery store before moving out in 1951 In 1951 Mayor Olson opened up Puget Sound port leading to increased traffic coming through town during that time An Acortaltes high school football team won state championships in 1978-79 One year later another local high school team made itto state semi-finals where they lost 58-7 against Spokane Valley HS
