Anacortes, Washington is a town in King County, Washington, United States. The population was 5,926 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Seattle–Tacoma Metropolitan Statistical Area. In 1851 Anacortes became the first incorporated town in King County and it remains its primary cultural and commercial center today. The original Anacortes post office opened on October 15, 1851. The name "Anacortes" comes from an Indian word meaning "place where the wind blows." The first settler in what is now Anacortes was John Atwater who arrived in 1792 with his family from Connecticut. He founded what is now known as Atwater's Landing on Puget Sound. In 1843 James Smeaton built a house on land that he donated to the community for use as a public school and store. This marked the beginning of Anacortes' commercial growth and ushered in a period of social development which included several churches and stores until 1909 when prohibition made trading illegal. In 1907 Halsey Capps bought all of the remaining land north of Yesler Way for $10,000 dollars to create Pioneer Square which still stands today as one of downtown Seattle's most popular tourist destinations thanks to its mix of shops, restaurants and museums dating back to that time In 1916 Anacortes passed through a charter amendment becoming an unincorporated village under government jurisdiction; however this status continued until 1959 when it was annexed byKing County On July 1st 1954 voters approved annexation into King County by an overwhelming margin; however it did not take effect until 1959 due to lack of funding In 1978 the population reached 5,926
Anacortes was founded in 1853 by Captain John Atwater and his wife, Anna. The town boundaries were established in 1854 when the Atwaters donated land to the town and it became an incorporated municipality on January 1, 1855. In 1880, Anacortes had a population of 581 people. The local paper, the Pioneer Advocate, was first published in 1892. The Anacortes Light Company became operational on July 8, 1899. On November 11th of that year, the company went out of business and all assets were sold to a group of investors led by Wm. A. Haggerty for $1 million dollars which included contributions from many individuals within the community including Captain John Atwater himself who had also given generously to the organization throughout its history. The light company remained operational until 1951 when it was replaced by a new power plant which provided electricity for both the town and surrounding villages until 1978 when that power plant closed as well due to environmental concerns associated with aluminum smelting operations taking place nearby at that time. A number of businesses have been located in Anacortes over its history including: an ice cream parlor (1905), a grocery store (1910), a post office (1914), two schools (1920-24), various industrial businesses such as an oil refinery (1927-30) and later another aluminum smelter(1978). In recent years there has been some redevelopment activity taking place with mixed use buildings being developed along First Street between Aberdeen Boulevard and Washington Avenue while other areas have seen more development near Highway 98W with restaurants/bars popping up along this corridor recently as well.
