The first European settlement in what is now King County was made by Juan de Fuca and his party of Spanish explorers in 1792 when they explored the Strait of Juan de Fuca from south to north. They named their new town after Anacortes Island off Vancouver Island, British Columbia where they had stopped for supplies en route to finding a passage to China. In 1851, George Henry Talbot founded a flour mill at Anacortes which became one of the largest flour mills in America until it closed its doors in 1907 due to competition from other mills in Seattle and Tacoma. The mill site still stands today across First Avenue from Puget Sound Maritime Museum (now Parthenon Museum). Between 1865 and 1880, nearly 2,000 people were employed at two sawmills that operated along First Avenue between Third Street South and Ninth Street North; these mills turned out lumber for buildings, furniture, bridges and canal boats. One sawmill also produced cheese while another manufactured beer for local breweries such as Pabst Brewing Company (later Schlitz Brewery) and Sunkist water bottles. The Second Industrial Revolution brought about large advances in transportation which led to an increase in population growth around Anacortes including arrivals of Asians starting during World War II when Japanese families moved into the area after fleeing Japan during World War II; however there has been little change since then with respect to housing patterns or employment opportunities for residents outside of agriculture/manufacturing jobs related directly or indirectly to those fields A major event that took place around this time was the opening of Interstate 5 near present day Snohomish County which increased traffic throughout King County making it difficult for farmers who depended on cross country travel over long distances to get their products to market quickly enough; this caused employers withinKingCountyto start looking for alternatives such as trucking goods into neighboring counties rather than shipping them all overland .
