Anacortes is a town in King County, Washington, United States. The population was 5,571 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Seattle metropolitan area. Anacortes was founded by George Vancouver in 1792 as an agricultural and trading post on Puget Sound. The name comes from the Spanish word "anas" meaning "northern cape." The first permanent settler in Anacortes was John Day who arrived in 1811. In 1823, James Kapp established a logging camp on shore of Elliott Bay which became the nucleus of today's town. The first school in Anacortes was built on land donated by Governor Isaac Stevens in 1827. There were no schools or public libraries until after World War II when a library and school district were created with money given to the town by General Douglas MacArthur during his visit to King County in 1945. During World War II, many Japanese-Americans who had been interned at Yakima Valley Farms near Olympia were relocated to Anacortes for safekeeping and work on local farms. After the war, many of these people returned to their homes but some continued living at Yakima Valley Farms until it closed down in 1959 because of government pressure to reduce wartime populations caused by housing shortages following the end of World War II. In 1966, voters passed a charter amendment giving city status to Anacortes; this gave city services such as police protection and firefighting immunity from state law absent county merger plans that year which would have resulted in more consolidated services within King County overall. In 1984, voters passed another charter amendment rescinding city status and returning all powers back to the Town Board; this provided for expanded economic development including taller buildings and incorporation into other cities through annexation efforts over time however no annexations have occurred since then due largely to zoning regulations which are not subject to change without voter approval though recent proposals seeking revision would do away with these regulations altogether). The present day community formed around an early lumberyard located on First Street between Elliott Bay Boulevard and Union boatsheds begangrowth when farmers started moving upriver from nearby farmland towards what is now downtown Seattle looking for better soil quality and cheaper prices for lumber during heavy original growth years (1910-1920) followed by slowdowns during Great Depression (1929-1939)
