Anacortes is a small town in King County, Washington. The population was 2,554 at the 2010 census. Anacortes is located on the Strait of Juan de Fuca and has a long history as an agricultural and fishing community. The area that now makes up Anacortes was first settled by people from southeast Asia during the late 19th century. In 1906, Anacortes became part of the new county of King County. The name "Anacortes" comes from the Nenadake word "anu-korai," meaning "place where there are apples." The First Nation people who lived in this area were known as the Kwakwaka'wakw. When white men arrived in this area in 1824, they found many apple trees but no water to drink because it was full of rainforest trees. A group of men led by Captain James Cook traveled through this region in 1792 when he mapped part of what is now King County. They named one end of Puget Sound 'Anacortes,' after Captain Cook's ship HMS Discovery (later HMS Endeavour). Captain Cook had also discovered metropolises like Seattle and Vancouver Island which later grew into larger cities with their own economies and government systems outside the cultural context where they originated. This rupture between cultures took place during much of North America during the 18th century; it wasn't until after Native American groups such as the Alaskan Malamute had experienced similar contact with Europeans that these barriers began to break down among different groups living within Indigenous societies across North America west of Mexico City." In 1886, Englishman Charles Goodyear established his company's Tire Works on land near present-day Anacortes while on a hunting trip around Puget Sound northeast of Seattle. Goodyear contracted with local Indians to supply him with tanned leather for his shoes and boots; he also purchased some fruit from them for food purposes. By 1890, Goodyear's tire business had become so successful that he decided to build a factory onslaughts distribution center at what is now Pacific Highway Northeast in order to serve his expanding company more efficiently from one location to another throughout Puget Sound![1] goodyear eventually built two other factories: One in Tacoma and one at Everett – both making use primarily sea salt tires instead of rubber.[2] Both Tacoma and Everett facilities were closed by World War II due to shortages caused by overworking resources associated with war production."[3] Today only two remnants remain: One as part of SRP Enterprises LLC., which occupies an old grain elevator off I-5 near Auburn;[4][5] and ANACORTES Tires & Rubber Company Inc., which manufactures replacement tires for cars, trucks, buses etc., along Pacific Highway NE between Puyallup Road NE and SE corner blockage".[6] Although regional companies have been active since WWII,[7][8][9][10], no single company has continued manufacturing tires here since then – until recently! When Microsoft moved its corporate headquarters from San Francisco Bay Area to Redmond WA in 1994,[11] it made room for its employees working out-of-state on various projects within Microsoft software development centers scattered all over western Washington State (except Bellevue)[12]. To accommodate these remote workers—many working 60 or more hours per week—Microsoft set up shop inside Redmond’s University District near Interstate 5/SRT (pronounced “Sherry”). With advances technology came increased productivity demands stemming not just from innovation within Microsoft itself but alsofrom growth across adjacent industries which encroached upon traditional workweek patterns….. masking industrial growth rates behind ever increasing military spending downtown however….little did we know how these employer functions would impact our lovely town annexed onto Redmond proper only four years prior when Microsoft vacated its campus…… [emphasis added]: p 9) After five years moving every few months due largely to weather conditions including extreme cold spells that lasted three weeks straight each winter (−50 degrees Fahrenheit), our beloved town annexing onto Redmond proper only four years prior ended up becoming ground zero for many technology related issues affecting nearby rural communities….. For example: shortly before their move out circa 1994 Microsoft shuttered several local mills specifically located around Anacorts including Chinook Paper Mills #1 & 2 situated about 1 ½ miles east & southwest respectively…. [emphasis added]: p 10) As mentioned earlier most residents didn't even know their towns were annexed until AFTER Microsoft left…… We're quite literally ground zero today thanks largely (but not exclusively)to those pesky feds 🙂
