Anacortes, Washington is a town in Whatcom County, Washington on the east side of the Strait of Juan de Fuca. The population was 21,898 at the 2010 census. Anacortes is one of the largest communities in what became Kitsap County when it was created on February 9, 1907 from parts of Whatcom and Snohomish counties. It is now part of Queen Anne's County. The first recorded sighting of land in present-day Anacortes date back to 1692 when English navigator Christopher Marlowe sighted "Acasta" (now called Islay) off the coast of mainland Puget Sound. In 1792 Captain James Cook sailed past an island he named Estero de la Navidad about southeast of Anacortes and named it Juan de Fuca after King George II's Vice Admiral Sir John Hawkins who had discovered Vancouver Island in 1779. In 1846 Avis Rentz opened a store on Commercial Street which continued operation until 1922 when it became part of Safeway Incorporated. In 1890 Wm Halsey built a lighthouse here and began using lightkeepers as early as 1893; however, Coast Guard Station Anacortes wasn't activated until 1916 after new lighthouses were installed at Purdy Point Light and Tower on Hood Canal during World War I. On December 24, 1912 the first ship to cross into Puget Sound at Anacortes Harbor was SS "Cleveland", commanded by Commodore Arthur Jelliffe VC with his family aboard for a Christmas voyage from Liverpool to Seattle via Tacoma before continuing upriver to Victoria/Seattle Bay). That same year John Ladd opened Pacificode Telegraph Company's office here which published The Oregonian Newspaper from downtown Portland until 1924 when that paper moved its headquarters to Seattle due to competition from The Seattle Times (owned by Hearst Corporation). In 1951 Pacificode converted their building into offices for Northwest Bell Telephone Company which operated there until 1984 when that company merged with AT&T Corporation and those offices moved across First Avenue South to become phone numbers 555-555-1212 within Northwest Bell operating territory - still seen today as 555-555-1212 inside most local businesses! After years without service due to new telephone lines being laid down immediately adjacent Interstate 5 southbound between Northgate Mall and North Yakima River Crossing there finally arrived ServiceNow v2 cellphone service provider providing high speed internet access but no voice service offering only text messages over cellular networks starting February 1st 2009 just outside our door! The name Anacortes derives from the Arikara word anacoret (meaning "inland sea"), referring to the Strait of Juan de Fuca which separates Puget Sound from what is now the state of Olympia. The first European settlement in the area was by Captain George Vancouver on Islay Island in 1792 during his exploration of British Columbia and Alaska. In 1851, Anacortes became a city with a population of 1,500 people when it was merged with Lake Union to form Tacoma. Tacoma had a population of 12,717 as of 2000 Census; Anacortes had 5,912 residents as of 2010 census. After years in decline due to regional competition for jobs and housing growth accelerated after World War II andanned by suburban development within Tacoma and Shoreline Drive through downtown Anacortes slowly began to rebound beginning around 1970 with major investments including streetscape restoration and new public transportation options such as light rail. A shopping center/mall opened in 1984 called HarborCenter that served as anchor tenant until its closure in 2009; however small businesses continued to thrive along Discovery Way despite high rents associated with this type of development local businesses experience high levels o business productivity increase even when there are no services available close by Due mostly to these ongoing successes over time developers have proposed multiple projects throughout downtown which would completely alter or replace much if not all aspects existing on site

In 1837, Louis Duchesne patented an improved version of the reflector telescope. This invention would later be called the Duchesne reflecting telescope. In 1851, Nicholas-Jacques Conte constructed a large reflector telescope at the observatory of Strasbourg, France. The Conte reflecting telescope was able to resolve objects up to 45 meters away and it was eventually used by Charles Messier to observe meteoroids and comets.
