Anacortes is a town in King County, Washington, United States. The population was 1,827 at the 2010 census. It is the second most populous city in King County after Seattle. Anacortes is located on the eastern shore of Puget Sound and is gateway to the Strait of Juan de Fuca. The first Europeans to visit what is now Anacortes were fur traders travelling between Asia and North America in the 18th century. The town was founded by Captain George Vancouver on November 3, 1792 as part of his expedition across Lake Washington to find a route to China. On July 17, 1800, Vancouver's party reached the mouth of Sammamish River and camped there for two days before sailing northeast upriver to become the first European settlers in what would become King County. In 1851, when Puget Sound became a state of Washington, Anacortes became one of its first townships. In 1901, following enactment of territorial laws creating Yakima and Wenatchee counties within present-day King County, Anacortes voted unanimously to become an incorporated city with voting privileges under those counties' laws. On December 11th that year it officially took its name from its original location on Puget Sound - "Anacortes" meaning 'the headland'. ragtime pianist Red Garland lived briefly in Anacortes during World War I before returning home; he later composed an orchestral suite based on selections from his stay there called "Ragtime Across America". The Douglas MacArthur Bridge over Interstate 5 crossed into Oregon Territory near milepost 231 (later Improvement Road) on June 6th 1959 just prior to his inauguration as Ulysses S Grant's Vice Presidential running mate that day; this bridge remains both active vehicular traffic lanes still carrying I-5 southbound while also serving as a pedestrian crossing providing access from Oregon northbound until about milepost 248 (later US 12), which leads eastward into Thurston County adjacent to Olympia

Anacortes is a census-designated place in Kitsap County, Washington, United States. The population was 2,836 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Seattle–Tacoma metropolitan area. The first Europeans to visit what is now Anacortes were the Spanish in 1792 and they named it Refugio de las Nieves after a small waterfall nearby. The name Anacortes may be from "anker" or "anny", meaning 'safe' or 'protected'. In 1846, Año de la Independencia ( Year of Independence) was celebrated here with a public fairgrounds and parade on Puget Sound. In 1865, pioneer Elisha Denny built his homestead here. By 1886, there were over 25 businesses operating in Anacortes including 4 banks and 7 grocery stores. By 1912 there were 10 schools in the community with 75% of its students attending school on weekdays and 60% on Saturdays; most of the homes had been built since then! In 1984 Microsoft opened its Redmond headquarters just south of Anacortes by boat dock in Crystal Lake Park toxic water contaminated by methylmercury contamination from an old industrial site near Billingsgate Landing where Tacoma Boatyards used to operate until it closed down in 1976 because of PCBs contaminating their products. Business boomed as people began using boats to commute to work instead of cars which increased traffic congestion on I-5 corridor northbound between Seattle and Tacoma due to this new source of pollution! In late 2009 Microsoft announced that they would be moving their main campus out of state (to Bellevue WA) but would maintain some labs and employees here within Redmond until their new campus opens up in 2020! This placed much pressure on Northwest Washington communities such as Anacortes which depended upon continued jobs for their residents! After years of planning andHousing development around this proposed move many families decided not to leave their homes when Microsoft announced their plans but face displacement when those same properties became available elsewhere!!!

The town grew rapidly, and in 1861, it was renamed Seattle after General James K. Polk's inauguration as president that year. After the war ended, Seattle experienced an era of growth and prosperity which continued until the early 21st century.
