Anacortes is a town in King County, Washington, United States. The population was 5,521 at the 2010 census. The name of the town has been spelled Anacortes since 1873. The first permanent settler in what is now Anacortes was Nicholas Raynolds in 1853. In 1870, John Wesley Smith founded a utopian community called Harmony on High Bluff Hill in present-day Anacortes. The community failed and closed its doors in 1872. In 1873, George Stephenson established an oil well at Point Defiance Cove on spit of land east of downtown Anacortes and named it "Anacortes." At first there were only a few people living hereabouts; however, over time more and more settlers arrived until by 1880 nearly all residents were from outside of King County. It wasn't until after the American Civil War that the boomtown atmosphere began to arrive with businesses starting up such as lumberjacks, harnessers, stagecoaches and hotels catering to travelers making their way through the area for fishing or logging trips along Puget Sound or across Elliott Bay to Olympia or Seattle. The railroad came next with its arrival during the late 1800s which led to even more businesses opening up around town including groceries, livery services and saloons as passengers took trains down Highway 99 north to Tacoma or south to Bellingham or Everett before continuing on into Oregon Country via Interstate 5W into what is now Spokane County. Aknown local saying goes like this: "When things are going good they're called 'bustin' but when they go bad they're called 'stabilizing.'" This prosperity led some families to buy properties closer to town while others opened up small stores/cafés near train stations (including one right off Highway 99) providing essential services like laundry, grocery shopping and rest stops for travelers who would then head back out onto the open road again for their next fishing expedition or logging trip! With so many new faces coming into town it was inevitable that there would be some form of rivalry - namely between those from within the city limits versus those from further away who often lived on larger estates surrounded by farmland - but this never really materialized beyond occasional disputes over petty issues such as zoning changes or parking spots! vernacular attitudes towards outsiders continued unabated until relatively recently when newer generations have come along who have startedto identify more with their hometown than with any other place in King County...thus slowly BUT surely reversing some old fashioned perceptions about what it means “to be an A” person in our little corner of central Washington!

The name change went into effect and continued to be used until 1978 when all but two of King County's municipalities were renamed under that program. The city has lost some key businesses during the past few years but it is still home to many sizeable businesses including Microsoft, Amazon, Costco, Starbucks, Boeing and Safeway among others.
