The last large-scale gun battle fought in Anacortes took place on September 11, 1898 when Commodore John Stevens and his squadron attacked the Mexican Navy ship Puebla off what is now Juan de Fuca Island.
Anacortes is a town in King County, Washington, United States. The population was 9,078 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Seattle–Tacoma metropolitan area. The town was founded in 1892 as a small farming and ranching community on the shores of Lake Union. In 1951 Anacortes became an incorporated municipality. The first people to inhabited what is now Anacortes were Chinook and Nisqually Native Americans who built their homes on stilts over waterlogged areas that are now known as Old Slave Lake and Little Slave Lake. The first white settlers arrived in 1892 when George Stephenson donated land for a commercial settlement on the edge of what is now Anacortes. At first, most of the settlers were miners who came down from British Columbia to prospect for gold and silver veins in what was then uncharted territory. However, by 1901, nearly all residents had departed for other parts of King County because of advances in transportation and industry. Anacortes remained largely rural until after World War II when construction began on Interstate 5 which connected Seattle with Tacoma concurrent with growth in the local agriculture economy which led to new housing developments being erected throughout downtown Anacortes including Eastern Market Plaza (now called Elliott Bay) where farmers could sell their produce directly to consumers The original townsite included land south of I-5 along old Route 99W between Ballard Avenue NW and Alki Beach Drive NE In 1951, following passage of Assembly Bill 296 which designated Anacorte as an incorporated municipality unincorporated lands east bank Fourth Street northward from I-5 were annexed into the municipality

Anacortes is a census-designated place (CDP) in King County, Washington, United States. The population was 3,569 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Seattle–Tacoma metropolitan area. The CDP has a land area of and as of the 2010 census had a population of 3,569 people. It is located on Puget Sound between Seattle and Tacoma and includes Anacortes Island. The name Anacortes comes from "anchovies" which were caught in the Strait of Juan de Fuca and then shipped to Japan where they were used as food. The first permanent European settler in what is now Anacortes was John Jacob Astor who sailed up Puget Sound in 1792 looking for new lands to explore. He named his new land Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe after his three daughters by his first wife Rachelle - he married her when she was just 23 years old. In 1821 Astor sold most of his holdings in Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe to Nicholas Murray Butler for $2 million dollars which made it one of the largest private acquisitions in American history at that time. Butler also founded Olympia Agricultural College which became Washington State University later that year. In 1886 James Wickersham set up a sawmill on Anacortes Island while living on Bainbridge Island adjacent to present day downtown Seattle; this mill continued operation until 1957 when it stopped operations due to lack of demand from buyers because the island had been developed into an urban center with few trees or marshes left undeveloped since its heyday as an agricultural community over 100 years ago! It's interesting to note that Wickersham actually designed much more than just the sawmill - he also built several houses on Bainbridge Island as well as some churches including Kitsap Methodist Episcopal Church (later known as First Christian Church), St Paul’s Evangelical Lutheran Church District #1 (now Our Lady Of Peace Parish), Assemblies Building (later known as Capitol Hill Presbyterian Church), Andover Road Baptist Chapel (now Pioneer Hall) – all while living life within walking distance of each other!
