The first permanent settlers in Anacortes were Methodist missionaries who came to the area in 1877. The town was founded on an island in Puget Sound near modern-day Seattle, and began as a small trading post. In 1907, Anacortes became the first municipality in Washington County. It was renamed Anacortes after its incorporation into the city of Portland on November 3, 1911. In 1970, Anacortes annexed the neighboring community of La Grande from Douglas Township. La Grande had been a farming community with a population of about 175 until it joined Anacortes as an incorporated village in 1960.
