Anacortes is a town in King County, Washington, United States. The population was 5,898 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Seattle-Tacoma Metropolitan Area. The first permanent residents of Anacortes were fishermen and their families who came to the area in 1855 from Sitka, Alaska. They became farmers and ranchers before moving to what is now Anacortes in 1916 when they purchased land from the Klamath People. The town was founded by James Irvine on July 8, 1916 as an agricultural community with a small post office and nine homes. In 1940, Anacortes joined the WA Statehood movement and became a state capital city under then Governor Earl Warren. In 1961 it became a city following passage of I-5 which moved most of the state government out of Olympia into Seattle metropolitan area limits. After years of growth and development due to its status as a city, Anacorte lost its status as capital until it regained it in 2003 when Proposition 1 was passed that increased funding for city services through Measure H (an increase in property values). Today, Anacorte is home to many businesses including Boeing Everett Heavy Lifting Equipment Company (Boeing), Microsoft Employees Association District 25 union hall (now occupied by Amazon), Northrop Grumman Corporationports center (now Aloha Airlines), Pacific Northwest Brewing Company headquarters complex (now MillerCoors Brewing Company) and several other high-tech companies as well as many small businesses that are also vital to local economy such as meatpacking plants and paper mills. With increasing suburbanization in King County over the past few decades there has been an overall decrease in employment opportunities within downtown AnacORTES but this does not mean that there are no jobs available outside of downtown or that job seekers have difficulty finding work within downtown because there are still numerous resources available both inside and outside of downtown."
