Anacortes is a town in King County, Washington, United States. The population was 8,811 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Seattle–Tacoma metropolitan area. Anacortes is a small town and it has a population density of only 2 people per square mile (1/km²). The racial makeup of Anacortes was 96% White, 0% Native American, 1% Asian, and 1% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 3% of the population. The village that now forms the core of Anacortes was first settled by farmers in 1854 as an agricultural community on what is now North Fourth Street between Everett Boulevard and First Hill Road. In 1859 it became incorporated as a town under the name Anacortes after local businessman George Witherspoon Anacorte. The name change came about because at the time most people in Anacortes lived on land owned by others and they did not have rights to use the water supplies or build homes there. In 1863 when Congress created King County they made AnacORTES one of its first municipalities which included all present-day King County including Bellevue to east and Yakima to west as well as parts of Pierce and Snohomish counties to north (the eastern border then being along Lake Washington). Prior to this annexation most residents in Bellevue & Yakima hadlived within their own townships but were annexed due to KCTS' ownership interest in those areas at that time; Townships existed until 1924 when they were abolished due mainly to growth within King County itself rather than annexation from other jurisdictions.# The Village formaited around North 4th Street with Everett Boulevard running parallelerving it bordered by First Hill Rd., Church St., State Hwy 99W & Thurston Ave.- This Area would eventually Become known As The Core Of What Is Now called "AnacORTES". The incorporation happened on April 17th 1861 thru proclamation from Governor Crampton made available for vote via special session held without Legislative Calendar # When Voters Appointed James Seddon To Serve As Mayor On November 7th 1861 he Was Approved By A majority Of Votes With Only One Vote Against him! James Seddon Became Mayor And setup Town Hall From His Home Which Would Later Become Our Courthouse # But Most importantly He Started Something That Would Stay With Us All These Years - THE BUSINESS OF BUSINESS! Anacortes, Washington is a small town located in King County, Washington. The population was 1,021 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Seattle-Tacoma metropolitan area. Anacortes was founded in 1851 by Captain George Vancouver and his wife Mary Eastman. In 1868, Anacortes became a city with its own government and City Hall building. The city's first mayor was John A. Sprague. In 1933, Anacortes annexed much of the neighboring town of Auburn to form a new city government which still governs the two towns today. The history of Anacortes begins with Captain George Vancouver who arrived in 1792 when he sailed from Scotland on HMS Beagle on an exploration voyage seeking new lands for Britain. He and his wife Mary set out from England on their vessel "Anaco" and landed at Bothell Bay on October 15th, 1851 after spending 5 months sailing around Puget Sound looking for land to settle upon. They found what they were looking for and built their family home there called Dawson's Plantation which they used until 1865 when they sold it to Danish immigrants Nils Christensen and his wife Kirsten who renamed it "Hansen". Hansen spent winters here then took off back up Sound to try again finding Northwest Passage but never returned so we know nothing about this story other than that it occurred some time during the 1800s or early 21st century! In 1865, Captain George Vancouver's descendant Nicholas Vancouver bought Dawson's Plantation from Kirsten Hansen and started living there himself as an English gentleman farmer although he continued to call himself "Captain Vancouver". When British Columbia became Canada in 1867, Nicholas Vancouver changed his name to Anacortes because that is where he thought Canada would lead him - into Northwestern America! He had read about the area being rich in minerals so he decided to establish an economy based upon mining those resources rather than farming or trading goods between countries like many other British people at that time! In 1933, Mayor Sprague appointed Elisha Gray as the first official City Administrator of Anacortes after becoming aware of concerns that local government functions were not being carried out effectively due to lack of funds raised by annexation fees levied by surrounding cities such as Auburn (the original annexation). Gray organized a referendum asking residents if they wanted their municipality upgraded from Township status (which it received) to City status (which they did!). Afterward Mayor Sprague announced that all future annexations will be conducted through a citizens' vote before going ahead with any changes! This practice continues today with annexations taking place through referendums only once all potential benefits have been exhausted - making sure that everyone has a voice in decisions made about our community!

Additionally, an ambitious housing development called "Anacreon" is underway adjacent to Interstate 5 across from Tacoma Municipal Airport.
