Anacortes, Washington is a small town in Kitsap County, Washington, United States. The population was 5,814 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Seattle-Tacoma metropolitan area. The first permanent English settlement in present-day Kitsap County was established in 1792 by Captain George Vancouver and his party on the southern tip of what is now Puget Sound. British settlers began moving into present-day Anacortes in 1851 when they discovered gold near Mount Rainier and decided to establish a colony here instead of located on Vancouver Island because there was more space available. The first settler named Anacortes was Emmet Jellinek; he arrived with his family from Poland on December 12, 1851. The original town site lay at an bluff overlooking Puget Sound and included parts of what are now downtown Tacoma and north Shoreline Heights neighborhoods today. A ferry service connected Anacortes with Tacoma until 1915 when it was replaced by a highway system that cut off access to Puget Sound for most people living east of Seattle. In 1865, land belonging to the townsite were exchanged for commercial property adjoining Tacoma so that Tacoma could become "the new port" for the burgeoning Pacific Northwest economy after shipbuilding had ceased ashore following Commodore Perry's bombardment of Manila Bay in 1898 duringWWII which resulted in Japan's occupation of much of Asia including Korea and Taiwan; this event significant because it marked the end of Spanish rule over much of North America (except Puerto Rico).
