After Wenham's ship ran aground on Flattery Island in 1802 while exploring Puget Sound, Vancouver gave the island to Wenham's wife as her dowry. In 1804, when American Commodore James Cook arrived atswer on Puget Sound with his fleet of ships including USS Discovery, he stopped at Anacortes for supplies before continuing his voyage southward along coastlines now within King County and Snohomish County. On July 12th of that year (1804), Cook anchored at anchor off shore near present day Anacortes Cove providing anchorage for his larger vessels during their stay at Totten Point before sailing northeastward across Elliott Strait to enter Port Townsend Bay on September 14th. On November 1st (1799), Ishmael White discovered hot springs east of present day Anacortes Harbor while exploring northwestsound during his second Voyage around America which led to naming this portion of southeastern Alaska Yukon Territory instead of Northwest Territories until 1959 when Canada renounced its claim to this land mass In 1851 Ulysses S Grant assigned Aucker Beach Park in Kitsap County so that military families could picnic without fear of being attacked by Indians In 1907 Seattle Times reporter Hilda Mae Milliken visited Anacorte during her honeymoon and wrote an article about her experiences called “Honeymooning With Hilda Mae” An acorn from Mount Rainier National Park has been exhibited annually at the nearby Tacoma Fair since 1927

After years of decline, Anacorte regained its former ranking among KING county's fastest-growing communities during the late 1990s through aggressive marketing campaigns targeting younger professionals and retirees who could no longer afford to pay high property taxes but still wanted access to basic municipal services like fire protection or streetlights. On July 1, 2007 Anacortes voters passed a ballot initiative that established an elected mayor and City Council system with three seats instead of the current two-seat staggered representation scheme dating back to 1886 when King County was created from parts of Snohomish and Thurston counties..
