Anacortes is a town in King County, Washington. The population was 1,869 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Seattle–Tacoma metropolitan area. The first permanent settler in Anacortes was George Vancouver in 1859. The town was platted in 1872 by George Hennepin and named after Anacortes, British Columbia. The first post office opened in 1873 and remained open until 1907. At the time of its incorporation as a town, Anacortes had 4 businesses: two stagescoops and two hotels. In 1924, Anacortes annexed what is now the south side of Lake Union to form a new community; this annexation created an unincorporated area with a population of 2,500 people which includes much of today's downtown business district and portions of both sides of Lake Union including most of Husky Stadium on one side and Pioneer Square on the other. In 1941, following World War II when Tacoma became an urban area, Anacortes lost its importance as a rural community but it retained some remnants of its agricultural past such as several small farms which still produce crops today including corn, soybeans, wheat and apples. After years of decline during the 1970s through 2000s due to changing economic conditions throughout King County and elsewhere around Puget Sound region ( culminating with the recession that hit Northwest Washington hard), there has been recent resurgence for Anacortes as evidenced by increased commercial development along Interstate 5 about five miles east from downtown and significant reinvestment in infrastructure projects such as widening I-5 to four lanes between Interstate 5th Avenue SE and Naito Parkway SE etc., while also attracting more residential development near I-5DOT's Richland Crossing interchange redeveloping former industrial land into mixed use/residential districts including luxury apartments/condominiums/hotels directly across from CenturyLink Field stadium After years primarily characterized by farmland usage there has been increasing interest among developers for multifamily housing developments over single family homes or anything just off the main arterial roadway leading into Tacoma or Everett The city government opted to participate inSound Transit's Light Rail program providing public transportation within walking distance to various destinations within city limits without having to buy any rights or share any costs with Sound Transit
