The town Growth Accelerator Act (H.R. 6) amended the US Constitution to create Anacortes as an independent city on July 1, 2002; however, this change did not take effect until January 1, 2003 when the City of Anacortes became an official member of King County government under state law. The lumber industry played a significant role in early Anacortes history with mills located near downtown and along Puget Sound Boulevard. Shipbuilding also featuring prominently throughout its history with five different vessels built at some point between 1894-1920: two schooners (the SS John Dory and SS Tacoma), three steamships (the USS Olympia (1914), the SS Orion (1929), and the SS Columbine (1936)), one tugboat (the MV Port Townsend Lumberjackshire II which served as both a commercial fishing vessel and Coast Guard auxiliary during World War II) and one oil tanker ((Cleveland Oil Co.)). Today there are only small remnants of these industries still standing including mill buildings that were used for storage or conversion into condos after they were sold off to developers over time; however larger portions of their original sites have been redeveloped into mixed-use neighborhoods with vacant storefronts converted into apartments or office space once again existing among other pieces of historical significance such as warehouses from which shops ran before being moved inland for moreadjacent landfills when transportation limitations caused them to be abandoned outright by developers over time In recent years much focus has been placed on civic infrastructure development within Downtown Anacortes - primarily through initiatives such as wide ribbon cuts for new streetlights which will help improve pedestrian safety while downtown undergoes extensive renovation/update projects; increased funding for public art installation throughout various areas throughout town center; & redevelopment opportunities available through Measure O - high density residential zoning that would allow taller buildings within walking distance of local businesses while preserving open green space necessary for cultural activities & nightlife ; additionally several private businesses have relocated within Downtown since last decade’s recession left many small businesses struggling to maintain overhead costs & stay afloat during tough times
