Anacortes, Washington is a small town in King County, Washington. The population was 527 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Seattle-Tacoma metropolitan area. The first permanent settler in Anacortes was George Webber who arrived in 1851. He and his family built a cabin on the east side of False Creek. In 1857, Commodore David Farragut anchored off Anacortes to refuel his navy and stock up on supplies for his attack against Mexican forces at San Diego Bay. As American sailors gathered around their admiral's flagship they watched as Webber unloaded cargo from a flatboat onto the beach, bricks by brick creating a wall that served as their shoreline for years to come. In 1876, lumber baron John Denny founded the city of Tacoma and moved his mills into what is now downtown Tacoma. Denny hired architect Alfred Condon to design an experimental commercial district that included the current courthouse square and many of today's streets such as First Avenue South and Harrison Street. The streetcar line that ran through downtown Tacoma connected Anacortes with Tacoma over two miles (3 kilometers) of track before it was replaced by horse carriages in 1897 Denny died suddenly in 1899 without having seen any fruits or vegetables grown on his land which would become one of Anacortes' main sources of revenue during its early years After Denny's death, control of the company passed through various hands until 1907 when it went under lease to Seattle businessman Charles Goodyear who made extensive improvements including turning Anacortes into one of Puget Sound’s most advanced communities
Anacortes, Washington was founded in 1792 by Captain John McLoughlin. The town became a port for fur traders and other commerce. The first post office was established in 1814. In 1847, the town was renamed Anacortes after Rear Admiral George Anacortes, commander of the Mexican navy at that time.
