The railroad reached Anacortes in 1893 and soon after various businesses were founded including lumberyards, breweries and a hotel/motel complex which still stands today called The Sands Resort & Casino (now run by Regency Gaming). During World War II many local farmers joined forces with other agricultural producers to produce fruits and vegetables for military camps around Puget Sound while also providing work for locals menfolk; this resulted in increased demand for food products from nearby cities such as Seattle so production dropped off during the war years although some new trucking routes were developed that supported wartime production levels. After the war Steelworkers began coming into town looking for jobs but quickly left when prices rose too high; this led to development of new industries such as plastics manufacture which went into full swing during the late 1960s until they abruptly stopped due to economic recession..
