Anacortes has been home to the Anacortes Shipbuilding and Dry Dock Company since 1887. In 1980, it became an incorporated city. The first Europeans to visit what is now King County were Spanish traders seeking access to Chinook salmon Running from their mountain strongholds in present-day Vancouver Island on the mainland. They stopped at Anacortes on their way south on November 15, 1792 during what would be known as Victoria Day. Captain James Cook had explored and charted much of North America this year, but he had not yet reached Seattle when he came ashore at Anacortes Bay on October 26th and called it "Cape Disappointment" (the name is still used). The first European settlement in present-day King County was founded by fur traders in 1827 nearpresent-day Lynden Creek Bridge (now part of Everett). A logging campaign started by Major George Simpson led to the discovery of timber along Puget Sound west of Seattle in 1829 and new towns sprang up around mills that processed wood: Watertown (1830), Lynnwood (1834), Vashon Island (1835), Issaquah (1836), Wenatchee Valley (1838) and Olympia (1839). Nearby Mount Rainier National Park made it possible for people to explore much of northwest Washington without having to go too far inland or cross treacherous rivers like the Snake or Columbia River; thus the development of Mount Vernon began soon after nearby Arenal Peak arrived as part of Guide Lake National Monument in 1936. By 1840 most residents had moved away from proximity to major cities due to inflationary prices caused by overgrazing concerns brought about by burgeoning agriculture; however some remained until after World War II when industry arrived with automobiles becoming popular transportation methods across many parts of the country. In 1880 Anacortes became an incorporated city under state law following a referendum vote with 60% yes being cast against incorporation because residents felt they needed more control over their finances than City Hall could provide given its limited resources. The city's first mayor was John Fenton who resigned office in 1886 because he couldn't keep up with growing expenses which included fire prevention, street maintenance and library construction projects which were also funded primarily through land sales revenue generated from lumbering operations outside town limits The annexation process for annexing neighboring towns Saundersville and Sumner continued until 1893 due largely to disagreements between City Hall staff about how best meet approved annexation boundaries while ensuring community benefits such as increased school enrollment, economic development opportunities and infrastructure improvements such as better water supplies went hand-in-hand In 1903 Union Pacific Railroad mainline extended into town limits opening up acres previously used for milling materials including coal dust that turned into black slag during processing so anemic local economies quickly assessered themselves unable economically or politically To compete with burgeoning railroad companies eastward throughout western Washington growth accelerated along I-5 corridor paralleling eastern edge Of Town Limits creating problems For future mayors & Council members fearing MARTA Rail expansion into Town Limits

The first permanent European settlement in what is now Anacortes was founded in 1851 by Captain George Vancouver as Fort Tacoma on Puget Sound. The town grew up around this military post until the natural gas reserves were discovered there in 1901 and development began earnestly throughout the next decade; an incorporated town charter was granted on July 1, 1903. In 1911 Anacortes became one of ten cities in Washington State organized under the federal jurisdiction of the newly created Interstate Commerce Commission as part of efforts to promote industrial growth across western Washington. Today, Anacortes remains an important center for government and industry with its three public schools and five private schools as well as several businesses and institutions that contribute to its economy such as Boeing Co., Microsoft Corp., Amazon Web Services Inc., Starbucks Coffee Company, and Mount Baker School District No. 5A (the only high school withinKing County).
