Anacortes, Washington is a small town located in King County, Washington. The population was 1,821 at the 2010 census. The town is home to the Anacortes Naval Shipyard and also contains a few businesses and residences. The town's nickname is "The Hub of the Northwest." The first people to live in what is now Anacortes were Native Americans who hunted and gathered food near the mouth of the Duwamish River. In 1853, Captain George Vancouver explored Puget Sound and saw an area that would become Anacortes on his journey up North. When he returned to Britain in 1854, he recommended that Congress build a lighthouse at Anacortes because it would be one of the few points along Puget Sound from which ships could navigate safely. In 1881, when Prince Rupert bought land around Anacortes for $575 dollars, he named it after himself – Rupert’s Land – in order to promote fur-raising here as well as other activities in his new colony. One hundred years later, on July 16th 2006, Prince Rupert’s land was sold by Microsoft for $5 million to develop an open-air shopping mall called “Rupert Park” adjacent to Anacortes Naval Shipyard. On December 12th 1905 two torpedoes were fired into Puget Sound from Japanese submarines near Olympia during World War I; both torpedoes missed their mark but made close misses of USS Tacoma (1894) moored off shore between Tacoma and Olympia; this event marks the first time torpedoes had been used against warships in warfare since antiquity. Anacortes was incorporated as a townsite on February 17th 1899 by Willard Richards with 300 residents living on lots donated by General Schuyler Colfax.* In 1916 Atlee Grant visited and liked what he saw so much that he offered money for more land.* On October 25th 1920 Donald Cameron purchased 640 acres from Jock Douglas* On November 5th 1922 incorporation became official when all inhabitants voted unanimously for incorporation.* After many deliberations over boundaries and changes within the community there finally emerged an unofficial map of what would eventually form today’s Municipality* With growth came additions such as culverts through sand bars bordering Deschutes River which necessitated dredging; these days part of Main Street runs above water level making navigation difficult without prior permission* On January 1st 1956 annexation became effective when all residents voted overwhelmingly yes* Over time local services have grown increasingly outsourced while larger municipalities have replaced those services becoming more expensive or unable to meet increased demands*. Today most public services are provided by contracted providers rather than municipality personnel only providing ambulance service * The biggest issue facing our community today seems to be lack of funding * Although annexation has brought many benefits such as expanded shopping opportunities and better transportation options there are negative effects too including high taxes & infrastructure deficits which needs attention if we want continue seeing growth & progress

In recent years however, there has been difficult competition from neighboring Everett for housing and jobs; As of 2016, Anacortes had a population of only 31,604.
