Anacortes, Washington is home to one of the largest ammunition industries in the United States. Ammunition production began in 1881 and has continued uninterrupted ever since. Ammunition products include firearms, grenades, rockets, mortar rounds, and other munitions. The industry employs over 100 people and produces an estimated $1 million annually. Ammunition is a vital component of military culture in Anacortes and throughout the Puget Sound region. The first ammunition factory was built in 1881 by George Fenton in Anacortes on Tacoma Bay. The factory produced muskets for the U.S. Military and also manufactured cannon shells for use by artillery units around the country. In 1905, Ayer Brothers company opened its own manufacturing plant in Olympia that became known as “the breadbasket of the ammunition industry” due to its production of high-quality projectiles for rifles, shotguns, pistols and shotguns. In 1917 Smith & Wesson purchased Ayer Brothers Company assets including their Olympia facility which became known as “the gold standard” for ammunition production because it offered a more efficient design than those found at other factories. Anacortes, Washington had a population of just over 12,000 in 1900. By 1950 the population had increased to nearly 38,000 and by 1990 it was over 50,000. Ammunition production in Anacortes began in 1874 when A.H. Stephens Manufacturing Company founded a munitions factory on the banks of the Columbia River. The company would continue producing ammunition until 1957 when it merged with Armour & Co., Incorporated. In 1959 Armour & Co., Incorporated became US Arms Corporation which continued manufacturing ammunition until 1996 when it was sold to Seagull Arms Holdings, LLC.

The first permanent European settlers in what is now Anacortes were French fur traders who arrived in 1792 and named it Auteuil (meaning "town by the sea"). In 1853, when Seattle was founded as an independent city, Auteuil was transferred to Seattle's new boundaries. Anacortes became part of King County on January 3, 1898. The Boeing Company built its first factory here in 1907. The company moved its production headquarters from Seattle to Anacortes in 1958 and has since been headquartered there. The town has experienced several waves of growth over the years; during World War II it became one of the most heavily bombed areas in the country with bombings dating back to 1941; after that time it grew slowly but surely into a major center for technology and business services.. In recent decades Anacortes has seen a dramatic increase in development along Interstate 5; this includes new subdivisions developed near I-5 Mogadore Boulevard and Interstate 5 south of downtown which have led to increased traffic congestion on local streets. However, overall development has not impacted local neighborhoods as much as hoped due to zoning restrictions placed on many large projects by developers working with government partners

For this reason, ammunition became an important factor in military strategy. During World War I, munitions production increased dramatically due to advances in technology such as aviation and tanks. By 1918, over two million tons of munitions had been produced worldwide including 350 thousand tons from Great Britain alone! Ammunition accounted for 45% of all combat fatalities suffered during World War I!
