Anacortes is a town in King County, Washington. The population was 5,693 at the 2010 census. The name Anacortes comes from an Indian word meaning "haunted place". In 1847, John Wesley Powell explored the Columbia River and its tributaries for the United States Geological Survey and recorded that he had seen what he thought were ghost towns in the area. After exploring further and finding no such towns, he named one of them Anacortes after his hometown of Ancaster in England. In 1916, George Eastman began manufacturing ammunition here. Ammunition production peaked in 1944 with 2 million rounds produced per month. It has since declined but still produces around 1 million rounds per month today. Ammunition production took off during World War II due to demand from the military and civilian populations across America; however, it was surpassed by munitions turned into weapons used in Vietnam which caused Ammo Production to decline again beginning in the early 1990s until finally disappearing altogether by 2006 when they closed their plant due to low demand among shooters only leaving stockpiles behind Today there are a few small businesses that sell ammo products including gunsmiths who specialise in repairing firearms as well as local retailers who carry a variety of guns both sporting and hunting related along with reloading supplies

The city is now home to over 25 thousand residents and is a center for education and commerce.
