The event was held on October 4, 1892 and was attended by members of the Aberdeen Rifle and Pistol Club. This event marked the beginning of a long association between gun enthusiasts and the naval shipyard which would continue through to the present day. In 1896, a new facility was built at Aberdeen Naval Shipyard and renamed "Naval Air Station" after Admiral Chester Nimitz who served as Commander inChief of US Navy during World War II. With this new location came a new era for target holders with improved facilities and opportunities to shoot from various perspectives including an underground range. In 1957, Navy pilots used these facilities to train fighter pilots during " rehearsals for take-offs ." On July 1st, 1984 MCAS Ridgefield opened its doors to the public when it became part of NAS Whidbey Island . As NAS Ridgefield grew more popular among shooters it decided to open its own ranges located adjacent to each other making shooting much easier than before. On July 1st, 2006 NAS Whidbey Island closed its doors tothe public due to budgetary reasons but is currently being leased back by Mariners Training Squadron (MTS) which offers instruction in marksmanship across many different disciplines including rifle, shotgun, pistol & airsoft training. MTS has also worked hard over recent years towards becoming an internationally accredited school providing courses leading up to NRA levels 3 & 4 Marksmanship qualifications
