The Winchester Rifle and Shotgun Company was founded in 1881 by George Armistead. The company became a firearms manufacturer, and produced both rifles and shotguns. Winchester rifle models have been used by many American presidents, including Ulysses S. Grant, Abraham Lincoln, James Buchanan, Franklin D. Roosevelt, and John F. Kennedy. In 1902 the company moved its plant to Chiavari, Italy; this plant was used to produce the Model 1903 Springfield rifle. In 1907 they moved their production facilities back to America; this factory continued to make shotguns until 1966. The Winchester Repeating Arms Company was founded in 1908 by Jock Mahony and John Moses Browning as a subsidiary of the Winchester Rifle and Shotgun Company. This company produced pistols, rifles, shotguns, reloads, Boone & Crockett knives (1892-1913), Ford products (1914-1920), ammunition boxes (1921-1926), and airplane parts (1927-1945). It merged with Remington Arms Corporation in 1949 to become one of the largest firearms manufacturing companies in the world. The name Remington has been reused several times within various gun manufacturers over the years: Remington Arms Co., Inc., REMINGTON PRODUCTS INC., Richardson Manufacturing Co., Inc., Firearms Industries Holdings LLC etc.—although all these companies are ultimately owned by Sturm Ruger & Co., Inc..

By 1795 when West Point was established, white settlers had built fortifications along both banks of Woburn Creek (now called Potomac River) adjacent to what is now downtown Winchester making it possible for them to trade with Native Americans without being attacked or interfered with by local Native American tribes who controlled much of eastern North America at that time.
