Winchester, Virginia is a small town located in Fairfax County, Virginia., United States. The population was 11,869 at the 2010 census. Winchester is part of the Washington-Alexandria-Arlington metropolitan area. Winchester is one of the few remaining towns in Fairfax County that were laid out by Virginians and not immigrants. The first settler in Winchester was John Smith, who built a cabin on the banks of the Potomac River in 1755. Other early settlers included George Washington and his family; James Mercer; Nathaniel Bacon; Joseph Priestley; and others. In 1800, Thomas Blackburn bought 100 acres (40 hectares) of land north of Winchester from Colonel John Browning for $1,000. Blackburn developed what would become known as Blackburn’s Mills which produced flour and other goods until 1865. By 1826, Winchester had a schoolhouse and three stores providing needed goods to support its growing population. In 1828, David Hunter founded an agricultural society with seven members to promote agriculture within the newly formed county of Fairfax. With advances in technology and increased production methods during this time period, Winchester became an important center for cotton farming due to its good soil and favorable location for irrigation systemsculationa trait that would later be lost in other areas of tobacco country such as West Virginia*. In 1854*, when Richmond was moved from Petersburg to become the capital of VA under President Andrew Johnson*, Winchester became one of several smaller cities consolidated into one entity under Johnson’s jurisdiction*fn1 After Johnson’s death in 1865*, control over Va.-area city consolidation passed through Congress to be vested with President Ulysses S Grant*fn2 At about this time*, some individuals within Hampshire County began developing land within Winchesters limits at present day Interstate 95*fn3 The community slowly grew up around its main square which featured a Presbyterian church (built 1886), Baptist church (1892), Methodist Episcopal Church (1907), American Legion Post No 2 (1927), Good Samaritan Volunteer fire Department No 1 (1929), Masonic Lodge #527 *fn4 Eventually there were four schools – two high schools (1900 & 1905) operated by private organizations before being taken over by local government entities such as Arlington County School District #5 or Prince George's County Public Schools *. From 1945 until 1984* when it merged with Alexandria School District #6*, Winchesters public schools were run by Arlington School Board trustees appointed by Governor Parris†.* After 1984*, all public school forms are now operated through Prince George's County Public Schools*. Winchester has always been home to many residents who come from various parts of the United States including England and Scotland*. Many people here have worked their way up through society including teachers, police officers, firefighters etc.* As arrowheads decorate many walls throughout town hall downtown where social events are held (*gives name nickname “Biggin Hill” ), it can be safely said that these people have helped make Winchesters one Of The Most Advanced Small Towns In America!
