At this time much of present day Alexandria consisted of open areas used for military purposes only such as Camp Casey where Generals Washington and Lee were quartered during their 18 Brandywine Campaigns (1777-1780). In 1814 Samuel Colt introduced a new type of revolver which eventually led to Colt Firearms Company being founded here in 1856 by Samuel Colt Sr., father of both American firearm manufacturers John M. Browning (1857-1936) and Harry Jinks (1915-1998). With world War II accelerating demand for firearms production towards the end of World War II, Winchester became known as "the Arsenal Of The East" due to its many plants manufacturing parts for guns used by Japan during World War II including Ueda Gun Works at 901 New Market Avenue NW
