Afterward, Grant remarked that "the people of Winchester have done more for this country than any other place". In 1865, during the American Civil War, Winchester was hit hard by Union shelling which destroyed most of its buildings andkilled nearly all its inhabitants without loss to military or civilian life except for a few who took refuge in barns or churches; only one person died from injuries sustained when shrapnel tore through a building near Market Street).
