Winchester is a town in Shenandoah County, Virginia, United States. The population was 9,869 at the 2010 census. Winchester is the county seat of Shenandoah County. It is part of the Wheeling–Lehigh Valley–Buckshotel, PA Metropolitan Statistical Area. Winchester was founded by Baptist missionaries in 1755 and became an important agricultural center during the antebellum period. In 1871, Winchester was designated as the capital of West Virginia when that state was created from portions of Virginia and Pennsylvania. Winchester history begins with Baptist missionaries who arrived in 1755 to start a new church estate in what is now Winchester, Virginia. The original settlers were primarily farmers who had to travel long distances for worship services and goods they needed for their gardens and homes. This isolation made it difficult for these early Baptists to spread their message throughout all of VA and PA; however, they persevered and started a new church on land located east of present-day Winchester which became known as "The Garden". Father George Washington attended one services at this new church estate before moving on to Mount Vernon where he served as President for two terms (1789-93). At this time, many Virginians were familiar with Protestant Christianity because Reverend John Wesley had toured England several times during the late 1700s preaching his gospel there. When British authorities found out about this international preacher's activities, they threatened College Chapel with legal action if he didn't leave America; however Reverend Wesley refused to leave until he had convinced King George III that Christianity should be considered equal under law with other religions (Ferguson). Consequently although Mormon pioneers began arriving in western West Virginia beginning in 1812 soon after Reverend Wesley's visit (Snyder), it wasn't until much later that Methodist Episcopalians followed suit (Dixon). By 1800 there were over 100 pastors registered with Connecticut Synod (Norman) active in Appalachia including Revs: James Mears & Ebenezer Cooke both from Winchester In order to centralize baptist activities and better serve Virginians throughout Western PA & VA (& Offutt), Father John Ziegler traveled from Stroudsburg MO backpacking through eastern PA & west VA stopping at various churches along the way (Ziegler). On July 1st 1792Father Ziegler preached his first sermon at College Chapel giving instruction on how one can be baptized into Christ Jesus without leaving home or family members behind (#1 Church History Booklet - pg 268) On November 26th 1792the first Bible class took place consisting of 11 boys from Cumberland Presbyterian Church led by Dr Elijah Rankin #2 Church History Booklet - pg 269) As Presbyterians we believe that baptism takes place immediately upon conversion so no waiting required! Many PCUSA ministers journeyed down south during this time such as Dr Elijah Rankin traveling up north on December 16th 1792to lead a Bible class at Westminster Presbyterian Church near Harrisburg KY then continuing south via Lynchburg MD on January 6th 1793(Rankin diary entry #1029) In order for future pastors like Dr Elijah Rankin to have continuity within their congregations across states... an act called "Presbyterian Reorganization" which took place between 1801-5 resulted in more than doubling our number from 24 elders to 48 not including deacons... From here things rapidly went downhill! Many denominations left due mainly due to political reasons such as religious differences among different factions within denominations... eventually leading us right back where we started!
