At one point during its early years, Winchester served as both an agricultural center and a stop on the National Road between Philadelphia and Richmond because it lay just upstream from that road's crossing at conceptional mile marker 516 (now mile marker 231). By 1811, however, most of what remained of New Jerusalem had either burned down or been abandoned due to difficulties with securing water supplies from nearby sources. In 1812-1813 however*, part of New Jerusalem reappeared along what is now Charles Street after being destroyed by fire.* From this new location* two churches were built; one known as First Presbyterian Church (later renamed Stonewall Presbyterian Church) and another which became known as Second Presbyterian Church once services began there†† *. Anglican services also took place at this second church until 1815 when they were moved to First Presbyterian Church due to lack thereof†† *. The first schoolhouse in Winchester opened in 1793 and was soon followed by three other schools‡‡*. These schools are now all gone but one: called Bethesda High School which opened in 1955 along modern day Gaylord Parkway adjacent to Interstate 95 southbound exit 4A*. According to local lore*, “Gone but not forgotten” refers not only to Bethesda High School but also several other buildings *such as those mentioned above* which still stand today including Good Shepherd Parish Hall on Lancaster Avenue across from King's Chapel Middle School*****. In addition to these physical landmarks*, many aspects about life at Winchester are still remembered through oral tradition or written history such as outlaws who passed through town while on their way into/out of prison;*) particularly Joe Hooker who killed six men while serving out his sentence at Appomattox Court House***** *.
