Winchester was founded in 1792 by Dr. John Winchester and his son, Nathaniel. The town was named for the Winchester rifle, which had been invented by George Washington. In 1871, Winchester became a city and was named for its founder and first mayor, George W. Winchester. The population of Winchester grew to over 30,000 people by 1920. However, World War II led to the decline of the town and it lost its status as a city in 1950. Today, Winchester is a small rural community with a population of around 100 people. The history of Winchesters can be traced back to early settlers who arrived in what is now Hampshire County in 1792. These pioneers were farmers and hunters who decided to settle down in what is now the town of Winchester because they found that there was plenty of land available for farming and hunting within the area. John Winchester first settled down in what is now downtown Winchester in 1792; he built a home on the current site of City Hall Square today. Nathaniel Wesley also newcomer to this area soon set up shop here; he owned several farms near present-day Manchester Road and River Road. In 1801, when John’s death left his 2nd wife with 3 young children under age 10 years old, she turned to her father-in-law for help raising these kids alone during their father’s absence at war overseas (the War of 1812). Drury & Son shipbuilders from Hartford Connecticut donated engines that powerdraggers used by Navy warships during WWI In 1850, when Hampshire County was separated from Virginia into Seven Counties forma Commonwealth government under James Buchanan as Governor General – it included much of what is now downtown Portsmouth – John Wimpole (John Fenton) bought about one million acres near present-day Manchester Road/River Road from Nicholas de Notre Dame (Nicholas de la Ronde), creating an unincorporated community known as “Winchester Manor” located along Bolton Pike south central Hampshire County side just off Truck Rd east side on public lands previously belonging to Nicholas de la Ronde parcels #1 thru 4 northwesterly line extending northerly about 800 yds bordered by Bolton road on both sides including remaining tracts westward acquired after war picnicking areas etc…. Mr Wimpole made all improvements himself…..300 yds long straight line westerly laid out… At least two mills operated here viz Smeaton Mill(1808) & Cottage Mill(1810) but no one knows how many others may have been situated hereabouts…. Also some brick buildings erected hereabouts but no evidence remains thereof….. One millstream flowed through this community right into nearby Manchester creek so water availability must have been good…. Amongst other things done hereabout: buildingof courthouse 1857; foundingof Episcopal Church 1868 (& Chapel 1860); schoolhouse1872; Masonic Lodge No 1 built 1876 This unincorporated community continued until 1861 when it amalgamated with nearby Newington due largely to competition from larger towns such as Portsmouth which were rapidly growing thanks to new transportation connections created by Union troops marching through neighboring counties during the Civil War era! When Newington merged with other smaller communities within seven days following Confederate victory at Appomattox Court House in April 1865 – all without giving any warning or opportunity for residents living outside those seven tiny townships within Hampton Roads Empire - much like today's descendants living inside Those 7 Rural Villages Within That Townsquare...due mostly too politicians & bureaucrats deciding things rather than anyone actually caring about our well being!
