A French man named Nicolas-Jacques Conte developed this muzzleloading weapon in 1785 which he called the “Foucault Rifle” He designed it as an adaptation of an old Parisian musket that could be handloaded with pistol powder and ballast to shoot roundeshot at distances up to 100 yards (91 m). To make this possible he required a new type of stock, known as a “stocket” or “guard” which prevented the breechblock from being bounced back while firing and caused greater stability during reloading. It was not until 1824 that any man made his own firearm capable of firing rounds through a paper target at long range with impunity
