The first floor of this building still stands today as part of Virginias Capitol Complex (now called Jamestown Row). In 1835–36 Augustus Saint Gaudens designed two monumental entrances to Westminster Abbey for President Andrew Johnson – one facing Constitution Avenue northwest from where present day Franklin D. Roosevelt Drive begins and another facing King Street southeast from White House Road (now Morningside Drive). In 1861 Confederate forces burned down much of downtown Richmond during their unsuccessful attempt to take that city during the American Civil War

When colonial forces retreated from Boston after the Battle of Bunker Hill on April 15th this year, General Charles Lee surrendered Williamsburg to Lieutenant Colonel William Smallwood and his regiment bearing Meriwether Lewis with orders to burn it down as an act of humiliation for British soldiers who had lost so many men during that battle. On July 9th 1775 Smallwood burned down Stonington Hall which housed some 500+ Native American war captivesincluding many women and children whom he forced into slavery under very difficult conditions before finally freeing them in 1779. In 1864 much of Williamsburg was destroyed by fire when Confederate troops burned all but one block of downtown while retreating from Gettysburg National Military Park northward following that battles largest battle ever fought on American soil
