Williamsburg was founded by James Williams in 1775 as a British military post on the north side of the Rappahannock River. The town was renamed James City in 1783, after James I of England. The town's firsterman and first mayor were both William Byrd. When the United States acquired independence from Great Britain, Williamsburg became an American city under its new government. In 1871, Virginia passed a bill annexing the town to Richmond County and rename it Richmond. The name change did not stick and the city reverted to its original name in 1931. The capital of Virginia during the colonial era was London because no other city offered enough protection from French forces during the North American War for America (1776-77). However, when George Washington moved his White House from New York City to Philadelphia in 1787, he also took with him most of his cabinet and many of his generals and advisers who wanted to continue fighting for their country back home. This decision effectively ended British control over Virginia which then passed into U.S hands pursuant to General Orders No 1&2 issued by Washington on March 25th & 26th, 1787 respectively; these orders allowed for continued British occupation only if troops were quartered near Charlottesville (then part of Virginia) or at some other points along the eastern seaboard where they could be used against Americans should they attempt any unconstitutional activities such as voting or assembling without written consent from local officials! From this point forward, Virginians lived primarily within their respective counties until 1959 when Interstate 95 was built making travel throughout much easier than it had been before- however there is still a bit of feeling that those living east of I-95 feel like they are missing out on all that Williamsburg has to offer! As one resident put it “It’s just so darn hard trying to find your way around without Google Maps!” Williamsburg proper occupies about six square miles (15 km²), including Mount Vernon which is located adjacent but not within bounds of the town limits. It includes three quarters of what once constituted Historic Richmond County (the remainder being now included in Fairfax County) and straddles two branches – South Branch Potomac River extending into Maryland while West Branch Potomac River extends into West Virginia – forming one continuous valley flanked by hills on either side reaching up unto heights exceeding 400 feet (.120 m). Although today mostly suburbanized due mainly to commuting costs associated with jobs in downtown Richmond (and Petersburg), much pre-war activity took place within these boundaries including: construction beginning immediately following King George III's accession upon Alexandria's incorporation as a county seat in 1802 concurrent with continuing growth along South Branch Potomac River; numerous plantations dottinglying this river Valley generally lying between Prince Edward Island off Northern Neck shoreline and Georgetownbar/Chantilly across Longwy Bridge; several large steamboats called Lynch boats having been built at various points along South Branch Potomac River prior to 1800…. [Today] much ancient architecture remains unexcavated beneath present day streetscape… elevation changes over time have resulted in major alteration or destructionofthe main thoroughfares running through historic Williamsburg center dating back more than two centuries….. With less development pressure exerted outside those core suburbs since Elizabethan times few visible reminders remainingof early commercial establishments remain….. DowntownRichmond survived relatively unscathed despite experiencing significant fires throughout eighteenth century; poorly designed 19th century reconstruction {euphemistically designated “restoration”} added very little character or landmark valueto district…. A comprehensive review prepared for [Virginia Governor] Bob McDonnell showed that approximately 60%of buildings destroyed or damaged between 1800[and 2009] involved properties belonging either directly or indirectlyto institutions associated with higher education….. Though drive-time visitors may notice few differences extantin central districts since Colonial days comparedto recent decades residentsstill tend touse public transportationrather thantransportthemselves…… One common complaint levied against older inner-city neighborhoods such as Midtown Manhattan isthat although buses run frequentlytotheir destinationsthey often arrive lateat nightcomparedtoRichmondvillegeexpressions OF joy whenevera bus arrives atone’s doorstep……………………………………...Many traditional lifestyle featuresremain unchanged even among gentrifying neighborhoods likeCrosstown streetcar stoponSadler roadalthoughactual residencyhas changed
