As Confederate forces began withdrawing from Richmond on April 14 following their failed attempt to siege that same fort, many northern troops encampment inside Fort Monroe were abandoned and left unguarded; this event is commonly referred to as "the abandonment of Fort Monroe". In 1865, during Reconstruction era government reforms in Virginia led to African American men being given voting rights and white women starting to be hired as teachers in schools run by black people; this caused some tension between black residents and local white residents who saw these changes as winnowing away jobs available only to those already well-off. On December 11th 1865 two days after Christmas – just weeks before Christmas – local white supremacists burned down four churches in downtown Williamsburg without warning or cause which resulted in 124 minor injuries including 43 women who were badly burned - all six victims survived; this event became known as "the burning of Stonewall Jackson". Some violence continued into mid-century with police officers called upon to break up numerous fights between groups using pepper spray or nightsticks but overall more peaceful times prevailed due in large part to new laws enacted by then Governor Averill Harriman which prohibited such discrimination against black Americans. In recent years much work has been done along both banks of James River restoring old bridges once destroyed by floods or hurricanes like Hurricane Floyd in 1992 followed by Tropical Storm Irene in 2011 which damaged several structures including one that collapsed killing seven people; both events brought attention backto Williamsburg and its rich history making it easier for tourists attractions like Colonial Williamsburgh Museum & House museum have increased visitation levels resulting not just economic growth but also job creation opportunities for locals too - something that has helped keep attendance high during tough economic times over past few decades!
