Williamsburg is a town in the Commonwealth of Virginia, United States. The population was 31,746 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Prince William County. Williamsburg was founded in 1699 by Governor James City and named for Princess Elizabeth of York, daughter of King George II of England and Scotland. The first gun barrels were made here in 1722 by Nicholas-Jacques Conte and built to supply the Continental Army during the American Revolutionary War. In 1814, General Robert Ewell established a battery onHigh Street corner with Elm streets to protect against British attack during the Battle of Gaines's Mill. The first European settlers arrived in what is now Williamsburg around 1700 AD when Englishman John Smith discovered land that would later become known as Richmond County. By 1800, there were over 100 British colonists living in what are today's areas including Richmond County and Petersburg Borough on Capitol Hill – where Fort Monroe now stands – while other settlements were established throughout what are now King George's County and Fairfax counties. The area that would become known as Williamsburg was named after Maj.-Gen.[1] George Washington's military headquarters during his tenure as Commander-in-Chief of American forces during the French and Indian War (1753-1763). On July 16, 1795,[2][3] General Washington ordered construction began on a small trading post called "Williamsburgh" on the south bank of James River adjacent to present day Midtown near where West Point completed its work two decades earlier (see photo below). This tiny outpost grew into one of America's most important shipping points due to its easy access to water supplies needed for crop production along with goods brought back from Europe via riverboats which docking at "Williamsburgh" allowed for transportationSafety aware travelers could disembark their vessel before getting offloaded onto smaller boats waiting for them downstream; this made river travel much more comfortable than travelling overland One result of this growing trade was increased investment within those early communities which led to an increase in population from 10 people per square mile reported by 1796 to 50 people per square mile by 1821[4].
