However, some redevelopment occurred in the early 20th century including construction of King’s Chapel (now part of National Cathedral) and Royal Botanic Garden which remain major attractions today. One significant event during this time was when General Robert E Lee surrendered his army at Appomattox Court House on April 11 1865; after days of fighting, many civilians died as a result from disease or bombardment from Confederate forces besieging Fort Pickett within minutes of surrendering.
