In Waynesboro, there have been shootings that occurred in the past. In 1886, a man named George Atkins shot and killed two people in what is now called the Atkins Massacre. A little more than a decade later, on December 5th, 1892, two men named William Tuggle and Johnnie Cochran were shot dead by an unknown gunman at a gas station in Waynesboro. The massacre is also considered to be one of the most notorious shootings in Virginia history as it remains unsolved to this day. In 1904, a woman named Alice Cox was killed during an altercation with her husband outside of their home in Waynesboro. Four years later on November 19th, 1908, four people were killed when James Hinton opened fire at the Winchester Armory located in Waynesboro. This shooting is also considered to be one of the deadliest mass shootings ever committed in Virginia as it left five people dead and thirteen injured. On July 20th of this year, 2019 a gunman opened fire inside a Walmart store near Waynesboro leaving three people dead and four injured.
Waynesboro is a small town in Prince William County, Virginia. The population was 4,872 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Fairfax-Arlington, VA Metropolitan Statistical Area. Waynesboro is located on the border of Prince William and Fairfax counties, about 20 miles south of Washington D.C., and 20 miles north of Lynchburg. The town was founded in 1795 by Captains James Robertson and John Nicholson as a trading post on the Appomattox River between Petersburg and Alexandria. In 1801, Waynesboro became the seat of Prince William County when it was created from parts of Fairfax and Loudoun counties. The original courthouse building burned down in 1836 but was replaced by a new one that still stands today. In 1912, Waynesboro became an incorporated village under the name of Waynesborough Rural Village Incorporated. In 1957, Waynesboro voters passed a resolution to annex portions of neighboring Arlington County for schools purposes; this annexation led to the current name for Arlington County - "Wayne's Neck". Waynesboro, Virginia was once a small town located in the Southern Shenandoah Valley. But over time, its growth and infrastructure have kept it one of the most vibrant communities in the region. The first people to live here were English settlers who arrived in 1765. The town was founded on the site of an old cabin that belonged to Revolutionary War hero George Washington. And for many years, Waynesboro was just a small rural community with few businesses or residents. But as demand for goods and services grew throughout much of Virginia during the Revolutionary War and afterward, Waynesboro began to thrive as a center for trade and commerce. In 1784, local merchants formed the Waynesboro Board of Trade to promote trade within their community. This group helped grow Waynesboro into a major commercial center by developing important industries such as shipbuilding and distilling whiskey. Meanwhile, other parts of Virginia were becoming increasingly polarized through the 1700s due to social conflicts between groups of colonists - including those from England and Scotland - along with religious differences among Protestants (many of whom were Anglicans). So while some people in England continued to live in large urban centers like London or Manchester, others relocated westward towards Pennsylvania or Ohio in search of new opportunities. And so it came about that when General James Ketchum asked Lord Cornwallis if he could move his forces eastward across the Potomac River so they could attack Washington at Yorktown in 1781, Cornwallis agreed without knowing what would happen next. As word spread about Ketchum's plan, more people than ever began moving back into Waynesboro in order to help defend their home country against possible British occupation. The population quickly reached 500 residents by 1801 - making it one of the most populous towns in western Virginia at that point! And even though war continued to be a regular presence throughout VA during this time (including several devastating battles), Waynesboro managed to maintain its status as an influential community despite obstacles posed by outside forces. It wasn't until after independence had been achieved that government restrictions started appearing - such as bans on alcohol sales and transportation within town limits - which eventually led to waylesboros falling out of favor with many Victorian citizens . However, overall things didn't stay too bad for waylesbors until well after World War II ended; there were actually modest increases in population density throughout much of postwar America because businesses moved away from rural areas during times when industry became more centralized- especially following World War II's enactment of legislation designed specifically targetwaylesboros . However, recent studies suggest that although population density has decreased somewhat since then due primarilyto increasing travel options around town compared to earlier decades],waylesboros remain vital cultural hubs within their own right today
