Waynesboro is a town in Prince William County, Virginia, United States. The population was 1,871 at the 2010 census. Waynesboro is located on the Potomac River and borders Loudoun County to the north, Fairfax County to the east, and Frederick County to the south. Waynesboro is an agricultural town that grew up around the J&J Mills paper company. The mills closed in 2006 but have been reborn as a new industrial park with facilities for both manufacturing and business services. The first people to live in what is now Waynesboro were Native American Indians who established a village about 9 miles (14 km) upstream from where it stands today. European settlers first arrived in what is today Waynesboro about 1736 when Capt. John Smith discovered land here along the river. For some time nothing was done about this discovery because there seemed no possibility of developing it since it lay within present-day Loudoun and Fairfax counties which had been part of Kings Dominion Province (the area now known as Maryland). In 1824 James Cranch founded Cranch's Store on Main Street in what is now Waynesboro while still living near Alexandria, Virginia; he was one of early settlers hereabouts. In 1829 Captain John Hoke built his mill on Anacostia Creek just west of present-day Waynesboro; this mill continued until 1906 when it burned down due to faulty wiring. When J&J Mills closed its doors for good two years ago much speculation circulated as to why such a venerable company would choose such an auspicious day as October 14th – November 3rd as its date of closure; however explanations could not be found that demonstrated any wrongdoing or mismanagement on their part by anyone associated with them during those short weeks leading up to their inevitable demise although they did file for bankruptcy four months prior thereto……….. On October 14th 2006 J&J announced via e-mail all employees must leave their jobs effective immediately because they were going out of business….. This event created quite an uproar throughout our community due mainly because many residents felt like they had been #betrayed by their employer……………. As we continue writing this document we can only imagine how emotions are continuing to run high in regards to J&P’s sudden exit from our town………………………………….. A few days later another email article was published that detailed all manner of allegations against management including sexual harassment claims made against several supervisors……… All these events lead up until October 20th when finally after months of anticipation local leaders gathered together at Community Center for a meetingWWWOWWWW………. At this meeting things came full circle with news that J&P would be reopening under different ownership but with same name so everyone could get back into work and forget everything that happened earlier…………….. We cannot emphasize enough how special this moment was for us personally given how hard all these events were actually for us personally…………….
