The first gun sling was made in Waynesboro, Virginia in the early 1800s.
Waynesboro, Virginia is a small town located in the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia. The population was 5,752 at the 2010 census, up from 4,711 at the 2000 census. The downtown area is home to Waynesboro United Methodist Church and the Waynesboro School District. The village of Waynesboro was founded by John Nicholson in 1796. It grew rapidly due to its location on strategic ridges near two major rivers and its close proximity to startups like Potomac Ferry Company and Bacon's Store. In 1810, Nicholson donated land for a public square which still stands today. In 1827, James Wirt acquired 1/4 mile of land east of the square for a schoolhouse and store. Wirt named his new community "Wirtstown." In 1847-48, businessman Samuel Tuttle built a sawmill on River Road in what is now the downtown area of Waynesboro. Tuttle became one of Richmond's most influential families thanks to his ownership of several businesses including tobacco warehouses, lumberyards and plantations throughout much of Virginia. In 1861-1865, during the American Civil War, Waynesboro was Siege Camp No. 2 within Confederate territory under command of General Robert Ewell Jr.. During this time period, many men from Waynesboro enlisted in Confederate armies such as those who fought at First Manassas Junction (in Fairfax County), Antietam (in Montgomery County) and Fredericksburg (in Prince George's County). Howesboroughedowne Presbyterian Church was organized in 1865 by Reverend JB Hegar with assistance from Revs AGB Stephenson & CClarkston from nearby Blacksburg & Stonington churches who had also been baptized there that year. Reverend Hegar served as pastor until his death in 1888; after him service continued intermittently through 1907 until finally being discontinued when he bequeathed all assets to Our Lady Of Mount Carmel Parish which erected an Anglican church on Main Street north side altar runway upon his death date November 6th 1908; see photo below: . Waynesboro is a town in Prince William County, Virginia, United States. The population was 3,806 at the 2010 census. Waynesboro is located on the eastern shore of the Shenandoah River and is part of the Washington–Alexandria Metropolitan Statistical Area. It is a small town that developed around two railroads and its location near Charlottesville made it an important transportation and commercial center during the late 19th century. In recent decades, Waynesboro has regained some of its former economic prominence as a bedroom community for Northern Virginia suburbs. The first permanent settler in Waynesboro was James Sprague in 1814. Sprague built a log cabin on what is now Main Street. He became one of the earliest farmers in Prince William County and his cabin served as both his home and office until he sold it to John Trenchard in 1825. Trenchard founded Loudoun & Augusta Railroad Company which connected parts of Richmond with Alexandria. In 1829, he donated land to build the first school in Waynesboro – Unitarian School House (now known as Old Main). The school initially taught children from families living along Loudoun Avenue but later offered classes to all students from nearby townships including those who lived on Crossroads Drive between Fairfax Road and Chantilly Road. From 1830-1833, Drury Builts built a store on East Broad Street across from Unitarian School House which became known as "The Brick Store". In 1834-1835, James Fenton built another log building – called "Fenton's Tavern" – on North High Street which functioned as a hotel until 1840 when it was replaced by "The Grange" which still stands today adjacent to SR 611 south of town limits]. In 1839-1840, George Eames set up shop in what is now First National Bank Building on South High Street which became known as Eames' Furniture Shop]]. In 1861-1862], James Sprague moved his business to new premises at 5th & Market Streets where he continued to operate it until his death in 1865]. In 1865-1866], Gouverneur Morris established Morris Paper Mill downriver from The brick store]]. On April 1st 1886], Waynesboro had its own school board with Wm Hite serving as superintendent]]. On October 15th 1902], Waynesboro participated in opening ceremonies for Virginia Railway Co.'s mainline linking Manchesterwith Winchester[ J.] McNaught served as honorary chairman ]. On November 5th 1904], Wm Hite resigned because of ill health after having served continuously since 1893][ A.]J.[ O'Neill succeeded him ]. On January 1st 1906], Edward Everett Bradley took office becoming first African American Mayor of Manassas Valley][ B.]Gerald Crouse succeeded him ]. In 1907), Wm Hite reorganized local government under Commonwealth Charter laws creating wayfinding district No 2 chartered under District Court Act 1924)]. By 1912), following World War I,[ C.]the railway company had withdrawn service east of Potomac River giving way to express service only westward ][ D.]the post office closed down due largely to increased mail volume caused by war efforts ][ E.] churches began organizing their services into Sunday morning Evenings>[ F.] within two years after being organized they were providing social support services like baked goods],[ G.] schools opened up throughout central PW county [/C.,D.,E.,F.–N/A
Waynesboro was founded in 1774 by Captain John Byers. The town was originally named "Winthrop" after the then-Governor of Virginia, James Wickham Fairfax. In 1848, Waynesboro became a U.S. state incorporated as West Virginia Territory. In 1863, Waynesboro became the seat of Harrison County and remained so until 1931 when it was transferred to Kanawha County.
