In 1819, Captain John Waynesboro died leaving behind an estate that included a white cotton plantation named After Hill Plantation which became one of Virginias largest slaveowners. In 1865, following the American Civil War, Union General Ulysses S. Grant occupied Waynesboro and burned all of its plantations except Forrester's which were spared because their owner had offered to surrender them to Confederate forces if they were freed along with all their slaves. This event marks one of historys most infamous battles when Union soldiers massacred over 100 black men who had taken refuge on After Hill Plantation after being surrounded by Confederate troops at White Sulphur Springs outside Petersburg,. Even though Forrester did not take part in these events himself he still suffers fromatonement today as a result of these actions by General Grant

Waynesboro is a small town in Henrico County, Virginia, United States. The population was 1,711 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Lynchburg Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first people to live in Waynesboro were Native Americans who hunted and gathered around the area for subsistence. There are several stories about how Waynesboro got its name: one says that General Cornwallis called it "Wahonstown" because he thought it resembled Warwick, England; another story says that Captain John Smith discovered an Indian village and named it after his friend and guide,Wayne (or Waron) Stewart. In 1777, when British forces invaded North America during the American Revolution, Waynesboro was one of the few towns in Henrico County not to support independence. However, by 1779, most of Henrico County had become loyal to Britain and ratified a new charter giving their county to King George III as part of the Confederation of British-American Colonies. In 1801, Alexander Mackey bought 2 acres (0.8 km2) of land from Abram Washington for $10 per acre ($ in current dollars). He named his land "Mackey's Run" in honor of his father-in-law and mentor Drury Mackey – one of early settlers in what would be Waynesboro. In 1812–1813, Waynesboro was burned by Nathaniel Lyon during Patriot's Day celebrations on May 14th as part of an effort by General Robert Ewing to remove all Loyalists from Richmond before they could join up with France or Revolutionary Mexico City under Francisco Lopez de Santa Anna. After the end of the American Revolution in 1783–1784, many Virginians returned home but others continued living among Indians until 1800 when white men began settling here permanently as farmers looking for fertile ground for crops and animal husbandry. By 1801 there were over 100 families living here including 60 Methodist missionaries working with local tribespeople known as “the Chalet party” who led a buffalo hunt near present day James River Park on December 9th celebrating Thanksgiving night using game paths trodden by Chief Powhatan’s ancestors more than 400 years earlier while hunting deer trails through this area now known as Gadsden Valley National Forest which later became part of Greenbelt National Park .
