Waynesboro is a small town in Fairfax County, Virginia, United States. The population was 5,821 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Washington Metropolitan Statistical Area. Waynesboro was founded in 1749 as a trading post on the upper Potomac River by Captain John Waynes and his family. The first white settler in Waynesboro was Samuel Willingham, who arrived in 1753. In 1818, Colonel George Barnard established a mission to serve as an Indian protector and evangelist for settlers near present-day Arlington Heights. The first school in Waynesboro was organized in 1800 by Reverend James Ferguson and Dr. Nicholas Culpepper. Training for teachers began soon after that; more than 100 students were taught at one time from local families including those of General Robert Ewell and Governor Thomas Neely Jr.. The town's first store opened in 1802 with Wm Higginson as the owner/manager. In 1824, Edwin Mudd came to Waynesboro to open a tannery which he continued until his death in 1847. During Mudd's ownership, many important milestones occurred such as construction of the Alexandria Canal (now called Ulysses S Grant National Park) and the purchase of land around present-day Arlington Heights that served as the nucleus for what would become Arlington National Cemetery later that year. Mudd also helped found Poquoson Institute—the first college preparatory school west of Baltimore—in 1827 on land purchased from David Lloyd Garrison by entrepreneur Shapley Ballou. In 1828, Methodism became an official religion here followed thereafter by other denominations including Baptist and Lutheran groups until c1930s when all but one church closed because of poor financial situations following World War I economic recession across Va., leading to increased integration among various religious congregations throughoutVa.; however some churches still operate today (e instance Episcopal Church). In 1850–51 Avila built a sawmill northeast of town which continues operation to this day providing much-needed work for local farmers during Agricultural Depression years; also during this time several stores opened up along US Route 1A southward from town center becoming key cultural anchors within waynesboro during its early history despite being largely ignored outside community due to lack thereof By 1870 there were 11 black residents living alone or with their parents withintown limits while schools had only 2 pupils total...In 1930 white flight fromVA due social injustice Leads To gentrification & displacement opportunities elsewhere around Va.–waynesboro loses most if not all its black residents followed by rapid loss of jobs & businesses over ensuing decades culminating with current declining population size & economy."

The town is named for General James Wilkinson who fought in the American Revolution and later served as a U.S. senator from Virginia. Waynesboro's first post office was established on October 14, 1800, and its first store was opened by Samuel Henson. The community origins can be traced to 1814 when Colonel John Brown erected a stockade around his home which served as a base of operations for local militia efforts during the War of 1812. In 1827, Waynesboro became part of Fairfax County and developed into an agricultural center with cotton plantations and 1,000 unoccupied white houses until emancipation in 1865 led to increased African American migration to Richmond and other areas surrounding Petersburg during this time period. During World War II, Waynesboro played host to many Victory Fliers who gathered at nearby Gordon Field before flying their planes over Japanese targets in support of military campaigns in Southeast Asia. Many black Americans took up farming after V-E Day while others worked various jobs throughout Reconstruction until opportunities arose for them following passage of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 which outlawed discrimination against black Americans by law enforcement officers including those working inside prisons and jails across America. After years of progressivism and activism by white citizens and organizations such as United Negro College Fund (UNCF) Waynesboro experienced rapid growth beginning in the late 1960s with new shopping malls opening up along Interstate 95 while also experiencing growth in professional industries such as accounting, engineering, health care services, software development/engineering firms etc.. In recent years there has been significant crime rates increase particularly around downtown where several large businesses have been closed or converted into apartments primarily catering to African American residents whose communities are struggling with high levels of crime rates despite efforts by police departments throughout Richmond to address these issues head on Despite this progressivism however downtown is still plagued by violence which often results from disputes between rival gangs or young men looking for alcohol or girls looking for men not license plates upon seeing vehicles that they believe are parked illegally
Waynesboro was founded in 1751 by Captain John Waynes and his wife, Deborah. The town was named for General James Wolfe and his victory over the French at the Battle of Quebec in 1759. The first courthouse was built in 1763. In 1814, Waynesboro became a parish and civil parish. It merged with Alexandria Parish in 1865.
