Waynesboro is a small town in Prince George's County, Virginia. The population was 1,542 at the 2010 census. Waynesboro was founded in 1795 and named for General Washington, who had been President of the United States at the time. The first store in Waynesboro was built by John Waynes and his family. In 1851, John Waynes’ son-in-law, David Capps, opened a grocery and general store on Main Street. In 1865, James Bowers Jr., a local farmer, opened a store on High Street near present day Interstate 66. By 1870, there were ten stores in Waynesboro with a population of 2,500 people. In 1876–77, Gouverneur Ketchum donated land to the town for retail use and designated Main Street as its commercial artery. In 1880–81 the town erected two Gothic Revival styled school buildings which are still used today as community center/library/theater complex. In 1892–93 Abraham White developed what is now known as Old Town into an all-purpose commercial district that included four blocks of Main Street between Church and Market Streets. That year also saw the opening of one of America's first movie theaters – the First National Theatre on Main Street – complete with balcony and Vaudeville theater style seating (now part of Chatham University). In 1901–02 when Wernher von Braun established his rocket laboratory at nearby Green Bank Army Airfield (now Wright Patterson Air Force Base), he needed to find an area where he could build his engines without infringing on adjoining landowners’ rights to use their land for military purposes only – so he donated 320 acres (12 km²) north of present day Waynesboro to the town for this purpose alone! As it happens, much later during World War II when American forces began using this same parcel as an airfield training ground for pilots and engineers from many countries including British Commonwealth Command RAF Station Middleton House) – wayward woods surrounding this field became hazardous dumping ground for all sorts of munitions left over from previous wars! And some folks in town still think that Von Braun may have had something to do with it 😉 The original residents of Waynesboro started coming together to help support their new community during its early years thanks largely to benevolent donations from various well-wishers like Mr Ketchum himself along with generously given monies by other civic leaders like JB Pritchett presidentially appointed “A Better Day Committee” headed by then Supervisor Edward Atherton who also served terms on Board OF Education while living in Alexandria VA.) At one point there were more than 100 citizens associated with various organizations engaged in fundraising activities including 50 or so women who managed operations outfitted garages located at several different businesses around town prior to 1918 when they became known as “the Ladies League Of Good Works” operated outof what is now Armstrong Farms which continued until disbanding circa 1960 after numerous moves among employees & members since incorporation!) Many aspects about our downtown core remain unchanged or even better today considering that most singleFamily dwellings have long ago been replaced or updated inside & outside real estate markets These days we enjoy excellent access both physically (& practically)to job centers/shopping malls located just minutes away via I-66 & I-495 arteries approximately 10 miles east situated adjacent Dulles Airport)! Yes folks way up high some would say!

Waynesboro was founded in 1753 as a small post office on the Great West Road by Captain James Robertson and his family. It became an important trade center during the early years of Virginia's colonial period because it had a deepwater port and easy access to tobacco and other goods brought overland from North Carolina and Maryland. In 1812, William Tecumseh Sherman stopped at Waynesboro for supplies on his way to battle General Robert E. Lee near Appomattox Court House in Virginia. In 1814, General Ulysses S. Grant made Waynesboro one of his bases for operations against Confederate forces during the American Civil War. After Confederate forces retreated from Yorktown, Union troops burned down most of the town on April 12, 1865; only some stores and homes remained standing until 1974 when they were restored by local citizens under auspices of the National Park Service as part of Waynesboro Battlefield National Historical Park
