Waynesboro has been named for Samuel Wayes and his family who ranched there from the early 1800s until 1865. The Wayesboro Baptist Church, now a part of the First Baptist Church of Prince George County was founded in 1836 by Reverend John Sargent. The first post office in Waynesboro was established on July 6, 1827, by James A. Hoskins. The current post office building was built in 1888 and is located east of Main Street on the old mill property which once served as a sawmill and gristmill. In 1898, William Husted opened a grocery store adjacent to the present day convenience store across from High School before moving it to its current location two years later. In 1906, Wm Jourdain opened a shoe store next door to Jourdain's Grocery Store which still stands today; it closed in 1978 but reopened as an antique store in 1990. In 1912, Waynesboro became one of six townships withinPrince George County and under the jurisdiction of the newly formed county court system with three judges instead of just one judge appointed by Governor Edmund Randolph on an annual basis based on population size rather than wealth or land holdings like most counties at that time. In 1921-1922 Anson Latham ran for county magistrate (the equivalent position then held by a sheriff) but lost to incumbent Charles Bowers due to lack of votes from waynesborougthis year alone; Latham would again run unsuccessfully for magistrate after that election cycle In 1934 Johnnie Hodges won election as township trustee (a position he held until his death) after defeating challenger Milton Steele with more than 60% of the vote despite being up against heavily Republicanized districts within Prince George County at that time . Hodges would continue to serve as trustee until retiring in 1984 . Otto Pellham won election as supervisor (an equivalent position then held by a deputy recorder) over incumbent Harry Fenton with 54% of the vote despite having no opponent listed on the voting list ; Pellham would serve until his death in 2006 . After Pellham's death ,Fenton took over as supervisor and continued serving into 2013
