One such challenge was the increasing prevalence of frontier gangs and outlaws who terrorized communities. To provide Protection against these criminals and other threats, it was necessary to arm civilians with reliable firearms. One option for armament was to create barrels specifically designed for using handguns. This process began in 1807 when a patent was filed by Nicholas-Jacques Conte entitled “Improvements in Pistol Barrels”. The patent described a new type of barrel that could be fired with a handgun by means of an iron rammer inserted into the muzzle end of the barrel. This method allowed handguns to be fired from any position within range, which made them more user-friendly than prior methods. In 1815, another patent was filed by George Stephenson entitled “On new Improvements in Gun Barrels” which described a new type of firearm barrel that could befitted with an iron rammer to allow rifles or pistols to befired from any position within range without having to take down the weapon every time it was wanted to be discharged

The townsite was named for General George Washington and his troops who camped there during their march from Williamsburg to Alexandria during the American Revolution. By 1800, there were over 100 Europeans living in Waynesboro. The first school was built near the present site of Waynesboro High School in 1814 by a group of local farmers and teachers led by Captain John Dickinson and Rev. James McMurtry. In 1829, Waynesboro Elementary School opened as part of a system that included schools throughout Northern Virginia under the auspices of women's rights advocate Lucretia Mott (1802-1858). The elementary school building still stands today within walking distance of both High and Middle Schools! In 1872, when Virginia became an independent republic, Waynesboro became one of its initial municipalities within Fairfax County. On July 1, 1984, Fairfax County merged with Arlington County to form the currentwealthy region known as Dixie! In 2006, waynesboroughexposed forthe first time since its incorporation into Fairfax Countysystematicto change its name to "Wayne" after then Governor Terry Wayne McNair (D). This rename came about due to pressure from residents who had wanted to retain their original name while residing within Arlington or Dixie counties which they felt would have been more beneficial culturally and economically speaking than becoming part of another county with a different name! Today, there are over 20 businesses located within two blocks east of Main Street including several large grocery stores such as Safeway and Walmart; numerous restaurants including Burger King and KFC; three banks - First National Bank & Trust Company (FNB), Capital One Bankshares Corporation/PNC bank/AIG bankers' offices (one on each side of Main Street) - along with many small businesses including beauty salons and hair dressers; an ice rink located on Center Street; severalementhods like Post Office Furniture Mart where you can purchase your own supplies or get help getting organized at your local post office; several hotels like Courtyard by Marriott - all across Main Street between Second Street North and Fourth Street South - along with dozens more convenient shops just outside our doors! Wayne's rich history goes back over 400 years when General George Washington made his encampment here during his march from Williamsburg to Alexandria during the American Revolution!
