Waynesboro is a small town located in the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia. The population was 4,898 at the 2010 census. Waynesboro is one of two towns in Pulaski County and is part of the Wheeling, WV–VA Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first white settler in Waynesboro was James Barnes, who arrived in 1772. In 1821, John Hargrave purchased land from Joseph Spencer for $1,000. The town began to grow when the railroad came through in 1873 and new industries such as cheese manufacturing and agriculture became established. The present-day town was founded on November 3, 1903 by George Washington Lewisohn and his wife Clara Burchfield Lewisohn with the donation of land that they owned east of Center Street. In 1865, Waynesboro became the home to Union General Ulysses S. Grant's headquarters during the American Civil War. After Grant's death in 1865, his headquarters were moved to nearby Fredericktown before being transferred back to Waynesboro after Confederate General Robert Ewell's victory over Union forces at Battle of Gettysburg occurred on July 6, 1863. In 1924, Waynesboro had its first Baptist church and served as a center for religious education for children throughout Pulaski County until it closed its doors in 1951 due to budget cuts by then-Governor Frank Whitehurstitheringly effective implementation of central government canons regarding public education within Virginia under then-President Harry Truman's administration following Franklin D Roosevelt's New Deal policies which aimed to improve economic opportunity across all social strata throughout America while preserving traditional values like individualism and self-reliance among rural Americans fleeing Standard Oil Company monopolization during Reconstruction Era). Waynesboro is a town in Prince George's County, Maryland, United States. The population was 1,814 at the 2010 census. Waynesboro is located on the Potomac River at (38.760977, -76.538735). The first permanent settlers in Waynesboro were three families who arrived in 1774 from what is now York County, Pennsylvania. They named their settlement "Wantrytown" after Captain John Warthorne of the British Army who had been commandant of Fortress Cumberland in Philadelphia during the American Revolution. In 1780, Colonel William Preston built a small fortification known as Fort Preston on the banks of the Potomac River to protect his land grant near Alexandria which he had received from King George III for his service during the American Revolution. The town was platted and called "Preston" in honor of Colonel Preston and its principal street remains named after him today: West Virginia Avenue (U.S. Route 9). After years of development by local farmers and traders, Waynesboro became an important transportation center during the 19th century due to its location on two major roads: Dutchnaan Road (now Interstate 95) and Princeton Road (now Ulysses S Grant Boulevard). The area also grew into a manufacturing center with mills being built around 1835 by prominent citizens such as Richard Blanding and Samuel Morse Sr.. In 1881, Waynesboro became one of thirteen incorporated towns in Prince George's County when it was created from part of Friendship Heights Township; later that year it annexed neighboring Old Town Township. 1
Waynesboro was founded in 1765 by Captain John Waynes. The town grew rapidly due to the production of tobacco and other crops. In 1820, Waynesboro became an independent county and remained so until 1965. The town experienced a heavy population growth during the late 19th century and early 20th century as passengers on the Alexandria and Petersburg Railroad transported goods from large cities to Waynesboro. By 1910, Waynesboro had a population of over 1,500 people. Businesses increased as the community became known for its good quality cotton Textile mills located nearby. These mills produced items such as sheets, nightgowns, curtains, towels, bedding, shoes and more throughout most of the 20th century. However, many of these businesses closed after World War II because of competition from larger textile companies in other parts of Virginia.
