Waynesboro is a town in Prince William County, Virginia, United States. The population was 10,362 at the 2010 census. Waynesboro is the only municipality in Prince William County and one of the two towns in the county (the other being Fallston). It is named for General Robert E. Lee and his wife Varina Custis Lee. The town was originally founded by Anglican missionaries in 1796 as North Point on the Potomac River. In 1803, it was renamed Waynesboro after General John Wayne who had fought against British forces during the War of 1812. In 1819, Waynesboro became part of Fairfax County when that county was formed from parts of Prince Edward and Loudoun counties. By 1870, however, most of Fairfax had been annexed by Richmond into Confederate Virginia. When Northern Virginia seceded from Confederate America in 1861, Waynesboro remained within Unionism and joined what became Fairfax County. In 1865, when Confederate General Jubal Early approached Mount Vernon to surrender his army there, President Abraham Lincoln ordered General Ulysses S. Grant to pursue Early and put him under arrest at Fort Monroe before he could return home to lead a counterattack against Union forces near Petersburg harbor on April 12th or 13th 1865 known as "The Appomattox Campaign". After Early's surrender at Appomattox Court House on April 14th 1865 (two days after Ford's surrender at Petersburg), many Confederates were executed immediately following their capture including GenL James Longstreet who said: "I participated with them in their highest crimes; now I am satisfied they are guilty as well as I am." There are still questions about what happened to thousands of Confederate soldiers who did not meet an executioner because they were taken prisoner or marched off to slavery northward along with those officers who surrendered without battle or capitulated unconditionally such as Generals Robert E.' Lee and James Longstreet... Many residents of Waynesboro continue to maintain that these men never left their homes EVER ABOVE THE POTOMAC RIVER AND NEAR THE FORT MARY HALL GATE! In 1922 Waynesboro voters approved a referendum asking for annexation by Arlington County which would have added 2 miles (3 km) north of town line eastwards along Interstate 95 towards Arlington Heights while retaining its own government institutions such as schools and fire halls etc... The vote failed with 56% novation but Town Council voted 6-1 to annex Norfolk Southern Railway Company land located southwest of town line between US 301/Old Dominion Road & Interstate 95 across Old Dominion Railroad right-of-way which included much improved farming facilities)... This would have given way to Arlingtons largest suburban community with over 100 000 residents consisting largely of workers for Norfolk Southern Railway Company
